Graham Thomas or Golden Celebration
Comments (13)I have a Graham Thomas. This is its second year and after last year's harsh winter, it is coming back very slowly. I pruned it back just the same way I did the others and it's barely growing. I am trying to give it time though. My favorite vigorous yellow DA rose is Teasing Georgia. I happened to find this particular bush at Lowe's last year on the 50% off pile. It looked sickly and only had one cane. I brought it home and last year, it tripled its size and had multiple flushes. This year, it's almost 6 feet tall and about 4 feet wide. Very vigorous and it has the most gorgeous flowers. I have most of the other bushes you mentioned but my Teasing Georgia bush is my absolute favorite :)...See MoreGraham Thomas looking bad
Comments (3)Thanks, Buford! I did spray, but I used a home-made recipe that I got from some senior rosarians in our local antique rose club: Lite vegetable oil, Palmolive liquid, baking soda and fish emulsion in a gallon of water in a pump sprayer. That's all my roses have ever needed before, and seldom at that. I guess GT will need stronger, more toxic nasty stuff? This is a bummer: one of the reasons I love my antique roses is that they seldom need all those chemicals that hurt the bees and frogs and stuff....See MoreHelp me sentence Graham Thomas
Comments (24)I always wait three years on a rose I really want to succeed. Sometimes it takes that long for the roots to really get going and the top to grow the way it is supposed to. That said, if the plant is miserly, miserable and ugly, I don't hesitate to shove prune. My experience the GT is a very mixed one. I have had it in my garden for 14 years and would only very reluctantly take it out. It is extremely vigorous and takes some work to keep it under control. It blooms every 6-7 weeks in long-lasting flushes. The individual flowers don't last particularly long, but clean off nicely. It is very susceptible to blackspot in my cool, damp coastal climate. I've been known in years when we've had too much fog and damp to completely defoliate the plant and prune it back by half to two thirds in July. Even then, it comes back like something out a horror movie -- stronger and more menacing than ever. I love the color, the vigor, the huge quantity of blooms I get and the lovely form. Without the vigor though, it would probably have to go. So, I guess it's up to you whether you really want this plant or not. There are lots of other roses to grow!...See MoreGraham Thomas and blackspot
Comments (9)When your GT gets somewhat bigger and stronger, it might be somewhat more vigorous about resisting disease. If it was planted in Aug., it hasn't really had time to settle in and develop a good root system yet, plus autumn (as the temps cool off a bit) tends to be prime BS season, so it really isn't a good measure of GT's year-round performance, particularly as it gains maturity. On the other hand, it is not unusual to find posts on this forum complaining that GT is not very disease-resistant. I might add, if Bayer Garden Disease Control for Roses, Flowers, and Shrubs doesn't work effectively on a rose, then probably nothing will. If the BS is really bad, it may take several sprays (10 days-2 weeks apart) for the spray to be completely effective. However, the leaves that already have spots will still have spots--no spray makes the spots invisible. About all you can do with the already-spoiled leaves is pull them off and throw them away. Good luck. Kate...See Morekingcobbtx7b
