I would be very sad if I had to give up the hardy hibiscus because of pesky bugs of some sort Sue. I am concerned that a deep red one that I bought as an end-of-season bargain last year went limp just after it started blooming a week or so ago. It looked like some sort of wilt disease but I did a bunch of searching and couldnt find anything about diseases that may affect them. It wasnt insect damage and, when I cut the stems down today, the pith was white and didnt look diseased at all. Im hoping it just got too dry or something. The last picture (the best one) with the Russian Sage and Veronicastrum is actually from last year. Randy took that one all the good pictures I post are always his! The drought this year resulted in a somewhat reduced peak bloom for those hibiscuses so I didnt take a picture of that view this year. Interestingly, the hibiscus, sage and veronicastrum in the foreground are about 10-15 feet away from the hibiscuses in the background. Randy is clever at taking pictures like that.

Hibiscus moscheutos grows wild in roadside ditches and low areas in Kentucky. It should be rock-hardy anywhere in the state, no mulching necessary (the possible exception maybe being if you put in very small plants in fall). They are Japanese beetle magnets here, which has the potential to spoil the show if the bugs are in heavy supply (I see some untouched clumps, so location is important). A pyrethrin-type spray will kill JBs and keep them away for a few days at a time. There are other hardy hibiscus species, some surprisingly so given their native range. I have a white-flowered one in a front bed (raised from seed taken from a plant I had in Texas). It's been returning every year since about 2002. The comment about not needing perpetually moist soil is correct, but they'll be happier with an abundant moisture supply. At least one of our local big box stores sells lots of hardy hibiscus in pots, discounted after the blooming season.

Wow, you need to find a book with considerable details regarding Hibiscus species. For starters, you need to become much more familiar with the sections of Hibiscus. One of the largest sections is Furcaria of which you have named H. acetosella, sabdariffa, furcellatus, radiatus, cannabinus. It is remotely possible these can cross, but the chromosome counts will have to match. A small section of Hibiscus is Muenchhusia. This is only 5 species commonly called the American rose mallows. You only mentioned H. coccineus. If you find H. moschuetos, dascalyx, laevis, grandiflorous you will have the whole section. These are somewhat capable of crossing and most of the cultivars for H. moschuetos are a result of crosses between this section.
