Do I need a new kitchen sink when I replace my countertops?
I am about to replace granite with quartz countertops, but would like to keep the undermount, single basin, rectangular stainless steel sink I have, if I can. Right now the sink and counter are flush, but with the new counter I am planning to have a slight overhang of the counter, with sink edges recessed.
I am getting mixed input from contractors and fabricator about potential issues when trying to re-install the old sink - from needing to take the old sink for several days to make the template, to having difficulty removing it from the old counter.
I am having a hard time justifying the additional expense, especially if I would be getting the exact same sink.
Looking for some knowledge and experience with this, thank you!

Comments (11)I presume your present windows are single pane. Any storm windows? As you have been told, the pratice of replacing the material around the mullions is reglazing. If these windows are 4 over 4, or even 8 over 8, the reglazing is a big job. Caulking is done where the window frame sits in the frame both outside and inside. Obviously, you live in a part of the country not noted for mild winters so anything you can do to elivate the drafts should pay some dividends. Now, if I was looking at your home for a possible purchase, my first consideration is how much money will I need to spend to bring this home up to date. Comments (8)I wish I could do a regular downdraft hood, but I can't. I think replacing the old downdraft requires that also I look at the venting and cabinent space carefully.and see if the original venting was adequate and how much space i'll lose in the center island cabinent.. I don't know if I should have an HVAC person look at what was done before. I can see the $ adding up fast! The disturbing part is that after all the $ and work, I'll end up with something that has marginal performance and probably won't be much better than what I have. However, when it fails, I may not be able us us the existing butcher block island because of the cutout and installation of the new induction cook-top. So the choice seems to be, spend a lot for something that won't be much better than what I have, but avoid facing a problem later.. Pick the poison!...See More

Nasty sink flanges are easily returned to new with an 80 grit paper on a random orbital sander after scraping. Progressively finer grits return the factory finish. You may as well do the bowl while your at it.
