Flooring Design Dilemma

Refinish or install or new hardwood flooring?

I have prefinished Canadian Lauzon golden red oak floors called Riviera. Unfortunately I tiled the foyer and the kitchen with natural stone. For some reason the stone floor cracked (I live near a fault line) and I tried to find hardwood floor to match the rest of the house. Lauzon unfortunately retired that product and the closest match I fond was the Mirage golden red oak.

The new floor looks GREAT. Unfortunately it makes the old floor look jaded and yellowed. Moreover the Lauzon is glossy and the Mirage is matte.

What are my options now?

1. Can I refinish the Lauzon to match the mirage, they are both basically the same Canadian red oak but can I get the factory stain and finish? How painful is this process and how expensive? I need recommendations on some good refinishers in the bay area.

2. Live with the difference, the Mirage will also start to yellow and hopefully some day match!

3. Rip out the old Lauzon and refloor the rest of the house with new Mirage to match. This will cost me about $15K :-(

I would live with it. The Mirage will color change over time. Just be patience.

I need to see a pic from further back but IMO get them to match or it will always be a mismatch. The new will never catch up to the old . The new finishes are great ans stand up well. It is a big job and requires you to get all your stuff out and store it and stay somehwere else for a few days at least . As for price you need to get some quotes from pros in your area.15K sounds very cheap to me but I really hate to throw out perfectly good floor when the area to have an issue with is small. Check out if it is possible do the opposite and have the new finished to match the old then no move out required as long as oyu have another entrance .

Sounds fair to me. My parents had their floors refinished 20 years ago, stripped and re-coated and it was 2,000. But like the above mentioned, make sure they are reputable .

I can't help you with the installation costs but we refinished our red oak wood floors and were charged $1.64 per square foot. We are in the Chicagoland area. We got a bunch of different estimates all were under $2.00/sq ft. For our steps I think he charged $15 per but I honestly don't remember off hand. He gave us a bit of a discount because we said we would pay with cash. We did not stain them however, it was just sanding and putting the clear coat on. I would have loved to stain a bit darker but Dh won that argument :)

Life is going to happen. With wood you can do spot repairs and there will always be material (unfinished) available. With vynil, spot repairs are more difficult, since a entire floor needs to be removed. A matching product will be most likely discontinued due, to changing styles or trends. Therefore, finding a match maybe impossible in the future. You already have wood flooring, use it.

The old floor and the same species in new flooring can be finished to get close to European Oak. Bona Red Out, a pale fill stain for the open grain and a matte finish. You can look at samples at Monarch Plank.

If you choose to redo the whole space pick a European Oak wide engineered product. There are many suppliers right now.

Here's another view. Pretty amazing how different these two floors look when I kept the small set of samples side by side they didn't seem all that different. Next to the reddish yellow Lauzon the mirage looks slightly greenish. The reflective index of the two are so different as well as one is polished and the other is matte. Lesson learned never to piece meal hardwood floor jobs.
