Mostly I just take the open milkweed pods around my 5 acres and send them flying about. Sometimes I can find a bare patch of dirt that had a board or bucket or something on it to smother the weeds, then I press them into the dirt a bit. Very lackadaisical, and my milkweed crop has increased dramatically over the past 10 years. Mostly they probably plant themselves, but I try to help out by draping ripe seed pods in trees in other parts of the yard. Works fine. Mother Nature is the best gardener.

My butterflyweed pops up before my common. Butterflyweed is about 3/4" right now. I was clearing out that bed today and found it peeking. :) My "big" milkweed at the moment is a swamp milkweed that is about 7".

Hi Ravenclaw, first of all that isn’t syriaca, it’s tuberosa. Second you really shouldn’t put it in a pot, they like the ground much better. It also helps with hardiness, not that that’s really an issue. Last, it’s fall; it’s not dying, it’s just going dormant. Cut it off at ground level after it goes completely brown and I will come back up in the spring. Don’t give up on it if it doesn’t come up early. I had some that didn’t come up until mid June this year.

Thanks. I'm not sure how much a photo will add to what I've said. They look like healthy seedlings...just haven't grown at all to speak of, since they first germinated about 6 weeks ago. The planter they are in is about 14" in diameter. I thought milkweed liked full sun? But maybe rooftop full sun is different than ground-level full sun? My rooftop is 4 floors up from the ground. The roof surface is white. I've had a number of other perennials on the roof that do well every year...phlox, steeplebush, etc Thanks.
