Landscape Design Ask The Yard Doctor Paint

New fence stain

Hello, fence was just installed and needs stained. Unexpected bonus that I LOVE is that the LED lights from the new pool reflect against the fence. I am worried to stain and lose that effect. Can I do a semi-transparent light tan color and still have the light reflect like this? Does finish matter? Satin, or matte? I really know nothing about color and light theory so any help is appreciated.

Your semi-transparent is a good idea to even out the look of the grain. And you can lighten it at the same time using a paler color. Matte or flat... not satin...satin is a type of gloss...not good for a fence and you don't want glare.

From what I've read on the deck forum, a clear finish will not slow down graying. I have cedar fence around my house. I let it gray. Every 3 or 4 years I gently pressure wash it. If you are not careful, pressure washing will remove the soft parts of the wood. If you do decide on a stain, then be prepared to renew it every other year. Too much work, IMHO.

Sounds fine. For a fence that new, it really shouldn't be that dirty. You just want to make sure on the top where dirt may have been able to sit and work it's way into the grain that you clean that really well.

It is currently a special mixed Behr deck, fencing and siding stain to the shade of Cromwell gray. You can see the grain/texture of the wood but it is pretty full pigment.

If you use a solid color stain, you could put a sealer just over the nail heads or screws, whichever it is, so it wouldnt bleed through. A different type of nail or screw should have been used, so it wouldnt rust, and look like that. It will look very nice, once you stain it.
