Comments (7)Ah, bullrush! Thanks! Last year we had the worst infestation of gnats in the house. It was horrible! We tried all sorts of sprays, fly papers, pouring bleach down the drain, getting rid of all produce unless refrigerated, blah. Finally, I got some small decorateve jam jars (from the canning section at Walmart) and put in a bit of apple cider vinegar. I popped a few small holes into the lids and set them about the house. The gnats would climb into the holes to get the vinegar and get trapped in there and drown. After a week, they were down by half. After 2 weeks, not a single live gnat could be found. :-D...See MoreMosquito bites
Comments (4)If you crush Yarrow leaves or I guess more like fronds and rub that on a bite it will stop the itch. With the amount of mosquitoes we have right now it is impossible to keep up no matter what I use ....See Morechigger/mosquito bites
Comments (4)birkie, you're operating under the common assumption that chiggers bury themselves under their victim's skin...but (thank goodness!!!) that's simply not true. That awful itching comes from our reaction to the digestive enzymes in their saliva. Chiggers, though they may try to attach themselves to a warm blooded animal in order to get a blood meal, are easily washed or rubbed off. Then, it's up to us to find a way to get rid of that awful itch!...See MoreIn the same vein as mosquitoes, what are you doing about chiggars?
Comments (11)Hate those bugs more than mosquitos. One year I got about 90 or so bites and had to go to a doctor for a shot because of the incredible itchiness. I make sure that there are several fire ant mounds alive and well around the property, since they patrol everywhere and do eat chigger eggs, flea eggs, etc. I do not stand still in ankle-high grass since the chiggers can climb up on tall grass and climb onboard any animal (me) that the grass leans against. I do spray Deep Woods insect repellent on the shoes, socks, and cuffs if I am going to work out in their territory. Deet is a wonderful thing to be able to use in such warfare. When I do get the welts, I brush some of the Liquid Bandage on the welt, and it sure does help. The welt itch can last 2 weeks for me....See More- 3 years ago
