Need advice on updating 1980s stairway

Jo Stephens

We have a split stairway where one goes up to a den and the other goes up to the bedrooms. We removed the carpeting on the common landing and stairs to the den and had new wood laid. The stairs to the bedrooms are twice the length and the carpeting comes a little way up the wall on either side of the stairs. Removing that carpeting, I think, will make it necessary to redo the wall on one side because it is wallpapered. I don’t suppose there is any way to avoid removing those carpet edgings because they are so passé. Right? And I guess we need to do the stairs to the bedrooms the same way we did the stairs to the den? We are both retired now so it won’t be as easy to afford this part of the project as it was the first part. Any advice would be very welcome.
