Just heart broken. Only Friday were we talking to landscaper about fixing the cabling we'd put into this tree. Last night, about 3 am, I heard a loud crack and boom. I thought it was a neighbor's tree...until this a.m. when I woke up. Hopefully we can try to salvage what's left of our silver maple.

We lost 10 trees to straight line winds in June. Twice had to get a chainsaw out to remove limbs from the driveway to get out. A tree service has been contacted to remove the remainder of this tree. Too close to the house and power lines to risk more falling off.

We have these HUGE OLD Ash trees on our property. Easily 50'.

@User, nice tree! Hope you can avoid the emerald borer. We've lost more than a dozen Ash trees over the past several years to this pest.

@jrb451 & @Annie Deighnaugh We spent 3 hours taking down branches in the tree to the right. The house was built in 1963. I treated the two trees with a systemic while I was there. "IF" the branches just don't fall on the renters patio set or swing set or the grand kids....yikes! ALL the surrounding homes also have HUGE Ash trees....

Edited to say: None of the dead wood has signs of bugs. Yay! They could just be "old".

Our magnificent American Elm the last year (2010) that it leafed out. Had it taken down the following year. It was a 'landmark' in the neighborhood.

@lgmd_gaz it's sad and surprising how quickly they can die after first showing signs of decline. We have a Dogwood out back that a landscaper once called "specimen" that will most likely be brought down this fall. So sad to lose all these beautiful trees.

In fact, all plants have flowers of some sort, AFAIK.

Not all plants flower including pines, mosses, ferns. But this week, we are about plants not known or prized for their flowers, but for their other features, as opposed to last week which was concentrated on flowers specifically.

This job is hard enough, guys. Don't make it harder!
