Stone fruit rhubarb bread pudding

In the mess of trying to save most of what had been in my 30" wide x full height freezer when its guts froze up and had to be defrosted, I made two big breakfast bread puddings (another thread) and had some leftover bread. Originally it was going to be one breakfast and one stone fruit, but I was too tired and there was too much breakfast meat to salvage. But while that was happening, my peaches and nectarines went sad...and the apricots never got beyond crisp. And while we ate too many thawed rhubarb empanadas (they're good!), the rest were starting to get mold spots. And the package of pretzel buns that was on the counter before the fiasco were going to go moldy any second.

Hence, today's stone fruit and rhubarb bread pudding. Yesterday evening, I got more milk and some rhubarb, tore up the buns, sliced the empanadas, and cut the fruit and rhubarb (there's room in the fridge now for the containers, after so much went into the breakfast bread puddings). This morning, first thing, I set up the soak. I was just throwing things together. The pretzel buns, while they don't have the big salt seeds of actual pretzels, do have a saltiness from the soda bath. The empanadas are sweet. The fruit, even the more sour bits, have sugar, though the new rhubarb is its sour self. I was tempted to do pepper, but thought it would be too much, so landed on curry powder. Not a lot. Just enough to scent it and give a little background flavor (inc. pepepr) to the custard. Stone fruit goes well with curry.

It came out really well. I was bad! I tasted a tiny bit from the corner when it was fresh out of the oven, and it was so good, I ate a full spoonful before it had a chance to set. This is bad. I don't care! The bread pudding is wonderful, even if I "spoiled" it by being greedy.

Stonefruit Rhubarb Bread Pudding

Four large pretzel buns, about the same volume of mixed dry (mostly pretzel buns), 7-9 homemade rhubarb empanadas, a dozen eggs, 1 qt. rich whole milk, 1 pint cream, about 5-7 overripe peaches and nectarines (yellow and white), 4-5 beautiful never-softening apricots, 10-12 lovely dark cherries, 2 average stalks rhubarb (slightly woody), 3-4 firm shakes curry powder plus lightly on bottom and top.

(curry powder: turmeric, cumin, black pepper, ginger, coriander, fenugreek, garlic, celery seeds, cloves, cayenne pepper, caraway seed, white pepper)
