Something Happened on the Way to the Christmas Party
Comments (10)Hi Rob, Perhaps it was a labor contract or something that required them to service the planes with the snacks. I'll bet that none of the passengers wanted anything to eat at that time. That reminds me of another airline story. About a million years ago, we were a couple of working girls getting along on small salaries. My friend saw an ad for a cheap travel trip to Hawaii, seven days and six nights for a very low sum. We signed up, stayed at a lovely hotel, and had a great time. It was time to leave, and off we went to the airport. The airline had gone out of business with no notice at all! It wasn't TWA, but a fly-by-night (no wonder that term is used) organization. An airport employee contacted other airlines to get us to Los Angeles. United agreed to accommodate us, but there was only one space available. My friend insisted that I take it as my brother was to meet us in LA. She would come on the earliest flight available. I found the hotel where I had agreed to meet my brother, but soon got a phone message from him that a family emergency had come up and he wouldn't be able to meet me until the next afternoon. I sat out by the swimming pool, reading, not at all displeased to have time to spend in such a nice way. A young man came over and asked me if he could share the table with me as it had the only umbrella and the sun was so hot. We had an interesting conversation and he asked me to join him for dinner and dancing at the hotel that evening. The next morning he saw me in the lobby of the hotel. I guess that I must have looked distressed and he asked what the trouble was. I told him that I hadn't heard from my friend and was worried about her. She should have arrived by now. He asked me to come up to his room, and since he didn't seem to be an art connoisseur with etchings in his suitcase, I went with him. He got on the phone, called United Airlines and asked to speak to the president. I was shocked to hear him get right through. My new friend told him about a woman stranded in Hawaii and asked that passage be found for her on the next flight. It worked, she did arrive very soon after. My date from the night before had an executive sounding voice. He was a star of the Ice Capades and had just ended a tour in town; no wonder he was such a great dancer. I am sure not, but he was nice about it. But to compound matters, we still had to get back to our city and our tickets had been issued by the same slock-job outfit that had deserted us in Hawaii. Again the airport folks got us a ride on an available plane. This time it turned out that the air pressure wasn't working. We flew so low that we could see details of the Grand Canyon below us. I don't know why they didn't pull into an intermediate airport, but on we went. The problem was that some people were getting sick. The flight attendant was passing out sandwiches and asking those sane people what kind they wanted. It was very weird and we were so glad to get off that plane. Steve - I didn't give the name of the airline because they have since merged and I didn't want to put a black mark on their reputation. I had flown with them some years earlier to Europe and had a pleasant, uneventful trip at that time....See MoreDinner Party disaster
Comments (15)Hope you don't mind me sounding in so late. Sounds like you hosted a great party. Next time discuss menus with anyone with a dietary issue. Then if someone is planning to bring their own food you would have known. I do agree that it was rude of people to come to a dinner - where you had accomodated them all over the place - and they had brought everything for themselves anyway. Unfortunately, the accomodations you made for the Vegans probably contradicted the food issues of the Pickies. I would have LOVED your dinner choices but as for the Pickies - I will tell you what went wrong with those food choices: 1) veggies 2) hummus 3) bratts 4) grilled veggies 5) baked beans 6) cucumber 7) dill 8) sun dried tomato 9) Lemon Cello Torte When one is picky all of the above things with "strange" names puts them over the top. Veggies are usually extremely unpopular with picky people. Hummus has "texture" issues. Torte sounds "different" than cake. "Lemon" is different than vanilla. Potato salad is "mushy" and Sun-driend Tomatoes look "weird". Cucumbers have "seeds". Dill is an "herb". Baked Beans look "weird" and have "texture". I have noticed that picky people tend to hate beans! Brattwurst has the name "worst" in it (I kid you not!) Next time for the Pickies provide regular, common-brand Potato Chips, Hot Dogs, Brownies and a choice of sodas. They would then be in 7th Heaven....See MoreFancy Feast
Comments (21)Livvysmom is correct about questioning the inclusion of sweet potatoes etc in cat food. Cats CANNOT digest ANY plant materials, period. Therefore all you are doing by giving a cat food with plant products is wasting your money, and not helping your cat. To those who want to know, The definition for meat by-products by the Association of American Feed Control Officials is: The non-rendered, clean parts, other than meat, derived from slaughtered mammals. It includes, but is not limited to, lungs, spleen, kidneys, brain, livers, blood, bone, partially defatted low temperature fatty tissue, and stomachs and intestines freed of their contents. It does not include hair, horns, teeth and hoofs. It shall be suitable for use in animal food. If it bears name descriptive of its kind, it must correspond thereto. Carnivores, including cats, eat WHOLE prey, which of course includes lungs, liver, spleen, blood, bone, fat, stomach, and intestines. There is no good reason in the world to exclude these HEALTHY and NATURAL parts of animals in pet food. Now that is not to say that any particular company lies about what a meat by-product is. And pets with food allergies should not get foods with meat by-products listed as an ingredient because the food could contain a protein source that the animal is allergic to. But there isn't a reason in the world why a healthy cat can't or shouldn't consume by-products. In fact, they SHOULD eat these items because that is how cats evolved- eating WHOLE prey. The bones and brain contain the most taurine, an essential amino acid which can cause blindness and heart disease if not included in the diet. IMHO, any food such as FF that does NOT have items such as sweet potatoes and whatever IS a step up from any food that does contain those items. I'm not saying FF is the best cat food out there- frankly if I had a cat I would feed it WYSONG as I do my dogs when they are not getting homemade food. But I think that FF and similar all-meat diets are better for cats in particular than any food containing waste products such as sweet potatoes and carrots that cats cannot use at all. Only if they do not also include artificial preservatives and flavorings. I don't like guar gum in pet food either. But better a little guar gum than a bunch of veggies and fruit in cat food....See More6 1/2 DS excluded from bday party by SD
Comments (30)Hi All, thought I would give an update on the birthday party flaps. So, I extend invitations to SS29 and SGS 8 1/2 to DS7's (he's now 7 hurray!) birthday party at Chuck E. Cheese's last Saturday. DS7 chose the guests, short list including his 1/2 brother SS29 and SGS 8 1/2 and a few other kids friends. SS29's girlfriend, mother of his children, common law wife, calls and says they don't have bus/train fare to come! Nothing new but still a lot of nerve. As they have moved out to the desert, picking them up has become even more of an inconvinience. BUT, for the sake of DS7's birthday, DH does drive to pick up the crew from the desert. He gets there, then gf announces that the baby, SGS 2 1/2, is also coming to be cared for by DD36. Long story short, the crew shows up at Chuck E. Cheese courtesy of DH. Have not eaten, no gifts, dirty clothes it was unbelievable. SS29 spends the whole time playing with SGS 8 1/2, spends no time with my son, the one who invited him, DS7 whose feelings are hurt by this. SD 36 shows up with two more uninvited cousins from BM's side of the family but at least she pays for their play tokens. I won't continue the blow by tacky blow except, Because they live so far, we invited them all, SS29 included, to spend the night at our house, have a nice brunch and take them home. I get home with the balloons and gifts, SS29 has split, taken the bus for which he had supposedly no money to his mother's house to collect some items and basically dumped his kids on us to take care of over the weekend! No clothes, toiletries, no diapers or diaper stuff for the baby! I run down to Wal-Mart to buy pjs, Pull-Ups, diaper cream and a sippy cup. This time though, I let DH handle his people. I went on to church and brunch with my friends the next day after setting the kids up with some outdor games. Did not cook for them and put the Wal-Mart receipt on the counter. By the time I came back, he had insisted that his son, SS29 meet him at the train station to pick up his kids and take them back to the boondocks. If you want a nice LOL, SGS 8 1/2 left his library book at our house. SS29's gf called me and asked that I overnight it to her so it wouldn't be late. It took me a minute to collect myself from her gall. I told her I would pass it on to SD36 who could pass it on to BM, the grandmother, who could pass it on to them. Haven't heard from her since! Geez, they got a bag of new pj's, clothes, diapers, toiletries and fresh toothbrushes, I thought that was pretty good swag for some unexpected and not entirely welcome guests! Anyway, my son enjoyed his birthday admist all of the silly drama. The 2nd party planned at SD36 has been nixed....See Moredeegw
