Design Dilemma Bathrooms Lighting

LED medicine cabinet: 2 vertical side strips vs. LED on all 4 sides?

This may seem like a silly question but I haven't found advice on this topic anywhere on line. I want to get an LED medicine cabinet (24x30) for a bathroom renovation. I will also add a light bar above the mirror and an exhaust fan with a light in the center of the bathroom.

Some LED mirrors come with 2 vertical side strips and some come with strips on all 4 sides (see photos).

Pros and cons of each? I am not sure how to decide.

The pros of having light strips horizontally accross the top (and on all four sides) despending on the brand of medicine cabinet and the quality of the LED lighting used is it can illuminiate the majority of the bathroom depending on size of the bathroom. It can act as the main light source as well as provide task lighting. Also, medicine cabinets with the bottom light depending on the brand is a nightlight where you can turn off the other 3 sides and use the bottom light as the nightlight, which can be dimmed. Having only two light strips vertically on each side can also provide the same benefits, but does not have the nightlight function. It really dependes on the brand of medicinec cabinet you purchase as some brands offer better quality in craftsmanship, lighting technology and functionality. I hope this helps.

Thank you, Sidler! That’s extremely helpful information. I’ve read reviews for several mirrored LED cabinets where some people say they are bright enough for the whole bathroom, and others say the same cabinet is too dim— it seemed safest to add a lamp across the top to ensure adequate lighting.

I have better lighting now with the LED recessed. In the adjacent room, the 55 watt 2D surface mount fluorescent fixture was replaced as the space was enlarged and replaced with 5 LR6 lamps (10.5 watts). The space is now better lit than before and the power consumption is less especially since the lights are slightly dimmed. The light output is 2700k which is just like a traditional incandescent light. The 6" cans and lamps are cheaper than the 4" cans + LR4. The Cree xR6 ( where x == L :: x == C) do not require any trim ring. The CR6 is dimmable to ~5%. You should be able to look at the lights at Home Depot (CR6) or Lamps Plus. There may be flickering if the dimmer is not matched to the load. ie - the load is too small to be dimmed. For instance the Leviton Vizia RF+ has a min load of 40W which makes it unusable with just 1 or 2 LR6 lamps (total load for 2 - 21 watts). Lutron dimmers seem to be better than Leviton.

Annab6. Mine are open fixtures. Each lamp is rated at 10 watts. The lamp holders attach to a flexible cable and can be spaced as close together or as far apart as you like. Mine are at 6" intervals. The light projected is very even across the countertop. It is not super brilliant, but more than sufficient to evenly illuminate the countertop that would otherwise be shadowed by the upper cabinets. The light is a very pleasant and natural incandescent white color. Excess heat is not something that I've ever had cause to think about. They simply don't give off much heat. The xenon lamps are also dimmable. I have the under-cabinet lights switched on more than any other lighting in the kitchen. As soon as the sun goes down, the under-cabinet lights go on. When I'm cooking, I also turn on the recessed halogen fixtures that are mounted in the ceiling over the countertops. When I'm done working, the ceiling fixtures usually get dimmed or turned off, but the under-cabinet lights remain on. They remain on until I'm turning out all of the lights in the house at bedtime. I had very good luck with Lowe's Utilitech (made by Feit) Par 38 dimmable LEDs. The color temp is 3000K and it is very good light. We are on a wooded lot and also have mutable colors so finding the right bulbs has not been easy. Our HD does not yet have the Reveal LEDs. It will be interesting to see how those work eventually as there was a coating in the incandescents that kept them from going too candlelight though they were slightly red. I found the Utilitech to have bright and clear white light. But we are in the Northeast and those bulbs can look different in different parts of the country and in concert with the paint color. This lighting tech transition has not made this easy.

Even thin lights may show when you are sitting and look into the kitchen. It seems most new kitchen installs are done with a light rail added to hide the lights behind. We did an update several years ago and kept our old cabinets which had no light rail or moulding below the boxes. DH is rather handy and we bought some oak (our cabinets are oak) corner moulding about 3/4 or an inch wide. I got stain matched up at a good paint store. Cloverdale I believe and they can make stain to match if you bring in a door from your cabinets. We installed that below the cabinets and I stained and varnished the. They gave a little update to the cabinet look and do a great job of hiding our UCL's. They look like they were always on the cabinets and match perfectly. He also installed our UCL and drilled small holes in the bottom of the cabinet, fished the wire thru them and then behind, thru the wall studs up to a soffit where we have access. Wired in an on and off and dimmer switch in our Zephyr fan hood since it has lots of room in the metal body. Virtually no wire showing and the light switch is with the fan light switch. DH is so innovative!

@HU-655806221 - You are most welcome. As I mentioned it really depends on the brand of medicine cabinet. There are brands that have better quality LED lghting technology, which can illuminiate an entire bathroom where overhead lighting above the mirrored cabinet is not neccessaary. And there are brands which don't offer good illumination due to poor quality LED lighting. Not all LED bulbs are created equal.
