Design Dilemma Paint Remodeling

Need help with staining my bannisters.

I want to update my banisters. I recently had LVP flooring installed (Coretec, Mornington Oak). It has variations of color which I love. I wanted to match my bannisters and handrail to the flooring but I have had the worst time finding the right color. My bannisters and handrail are red oak. I bought Minwax Gel Stain in Walnut and applied the stain to a small area. The stain color looks …off. Can someone provide advice on the right color that I should use? I’m also considering painting the bannisters and handrails black but wasn’t sure how it would look since I don’t have black anywhere else in the house. Thanks in advance!

You could bring in some black accents with decor.

Or paint the front door. Or change the stair runner.

I like the black better than not-quite-matching.

Doesn't have to be a harsh black paint. Peppercorn paint might work.

Need help to remove dark stains on my bed frame

Hello everyone, I have had a Crate & Barrel Sierra queen bed for a few years and I love it. Recently I noticed there were a few "water mark" kind of stains on the side of the frame. To get rid of them, I googled and found oxiclean might be able to do the job. Big mistake! No only it didn't remove the water marks, but left a more obvious dark stain as shown in picture 2. In addition to the stains, I also see some scratches on part of the frame, looking like only affected wax layer (picture 1) . According to CB website, the bed frame is european white oak finished with oil and wax if this helps. I know very little about woodworking, so I am asking for your suggestions on how to deal with these two issues. Thanks a lot!!!

Two things. One, one species of wood cannot be successfully stained to look like another species of wood without LOTS of trial and error and a recipe of ingredients. And the different grains of wood cannot be changed to look like another. Two, that dark cherry finish is one of those recipes and is actually a sales tool, as the finish is not an actual cherry finish, but a finish that is more like a paint that disguises several different species of woods(birch/pine/alder/etc.) to look the same. Real cherry wood is much lighter when finished with normal finishes. Which means the best you will be able to do is to pick colors that you feel compliment the others. It will be almost impossible to match colors.

Oak floor throughout living, dining and family room. Currently a "yellowish". Walls are light gray and furniture transitional. I was thinking of something more "brown" would be more modern. Advise?

Thank both of you! I had not even thought about painting the door! Nor had I thought about painting the banisters a dark gray! My kitchen tile is dark blue, white and gray combo but the LVP flooring in the dining room separates the area. A dark gray or soft black might tie in nicely! I am going to remove the carpet on the stairs. I’m going to paint the treads the dark color and the risers white. I thought about putting an additive in the paint for the stairs to make them slip resistant. Have y’all done that; do you put the additive in the paint or the poly?

Paint the stair bannister, newel and treads , do NOT use any additive.

Try Ben Moore Raccoon Fur

Raccoon Fur 2126-20

It’s black without being jet black, with a hint of blue undertones. I'd use satin finish Regal or Advance

Get a runner on those stairs. It will keep the risers white instead of scuffed: ) and it is far safer for you and the pooch.
