Best online seed vendors?
Comments (28)marymb, Valueseeds is just a clearing house for overstocked or out of date seeds from thompson and morgan. Ive always had excellent germination from them however. (only problem with valueseeds is they do not update quick enough =)... Then they do and you want to buy everything! Thanks everyone for your suggestions! Alot of companies Ive heard of or used, but there were some new ones out there! My quick observations on some... Though im not expert on seed companies! Im placing a order with baker creek this year for the first time, they got alot of stuff! Ive done Johhnys and Pine tree in the past, I like pine tree alot, Last year I had a mixup with Johhnys about some fortex beans I wanted... IM ACROSS the state for goodness sake and they wanted to charge me 2.95 or something like that to ship 4.00 in beans. Anyways, I have no issue with thier seeds though, MY ONLY problem is anyone in maine carrying thier seeds are mostly north of me, for some reason there isnt alot of places in Maine carrying a MAINE company seeds. I do not order from burpee online... I can get thier seeds from walmart and lowes here, for cheaper , and sometimes more product in it. Go figure =). Ive done swallowtail seeds in the past, I might try them again this year to get those elusive fortex beans I wanna try.... Thank you again everyone!...See MoreVirus-indexed own root online vendors?
Comments (10)If you want to learn about Virus Indexing, google ELISA + plant + test + assay. The test's name is E.L.I.S.A. and last I heard there were eight different rose viruses that could be tested. There are kits or the test can be done by the folks who developed the kits. I know Appalacahian took roses to be tested. There are two sources for roses that have been through heat treatment to remove the viruses known (seen by visual inspection, roses that failed to stay clean when grafted onto a particular cherry stock or onto a very susceptible rose stock). J&P used to have a heat treatment facility; it's been closed for several years. Malcolm Manners in Floriad has heat treated a number of old roses and has shared his cleaned plants with a number of nurseries. UCDavis also maintains blocks of certain roses and rootstocks that are tested and are kept free of viruses. There are some other schemes for cleaning up roses and other plants, but they are in the scientific reporting stages. (Like cellular propagation of apical meristems into which the viruses are slower to move...theoretically.)...See MoreCrazy online vendor seed potato prices!
Comments (16)Well I guess I am crazy!!! I just finished ordering some German Butterball from Debruyn's website. I ordered #5 of the GB and also #1 of the Austrian Crescent fingerlings for $8.49 total plus about $15 shipping. Now I need to figure out where I am going to plant that much more seed. I see another bed or 2 in my future! Or maybe I will try to grow some of them using the deep straw method. NG - thanks again for the reminder on Debruyn!...See MoreRidiculous shipping charges from seed vendors
Comments (43)Ah, I have gradually changed my seed aquisition over the last few years so that I never buy any seed from 'established' seed houses such as T&M and even smaller, less corporate companies such as Chiltern Seeds. I will definitely scour the universe for something I badly need (my endless...and largely fruitless search for peucedanum/thyselium for example)...and will pay £££...although only in the direst of circumstances. However, a combination of seed collecting (I am crazed about this), membership of plant societies (and access to almost free seed lists) and a willingness to risk a few quid on the many, many internet sources. True, some of which are parlous but many others are brilliant (and a look at both the inventory and information makes it really easy to get a handle on some serious gardeners) This year, I ordered a slew of wild flowers from an ex-miner in Co Durham, including a few real surprises. None of these sources charge the ridiculous carriage costs of commercial companies with large payrolls and overheads, while I have access to an inventory which is vastly more expansive than well-known seed houses....See Moredbarron
