jalapeño season ... incoming

I notice the extraordinarily high prices recently. Hope that abates with more coming to market as I like to pickle them.

I usually grow my jalapenos from seed, but didn’t this year, and instead purchased seedlings from a local nursery. When they started producing, the peppers were light yellow, and not dark green as I’m used to. My husband said they taste good, they’re just hotter than regular green jalapenos.

So a quick google search led me to articles which stated that there was a mix-up at one of the nation’s largest seed distributors and it’s being termed ”jalapeno-gate”!

So perhaps high jalapeno prices are regional right now, depending on which areas of the country were hit with pepper seed confusion.

Do you grow your own? I've never had problems with this plant outdoing itself. Right now I have at least a dozen pickable-size on still small plants.

bragu, what was the price? I just bought a bunch of jalapeños yesterday for 99 cents/lb.

when a plant is young and healthy it has new roots. when the roots get old the plant is old. old roots have problems the roots might be sick. the best thing in my mind is to take a cutting of the old plant and root it. plant the new rooted cutting and you have a new plant on new roots. if the soil is fresh the plant should give big peppers again. there is also the possibility that the plant picked up some germs, pathogens, disease, virus etc of the roots that is holding it back. dont know. but I do know that Young new plants on young new roots grow well. Old plants on old roots grow like old people. I am old. and so I understand it from experience. I just can not do what I could do when I was young. Your soil in that spot might now have pathogens holding back the plant. so a new plant in the same spot might not grow like the first one did. the soil can get depleted also. I would root a new cutting and add a lot of new fresh compost to the spot before putting in the new plant.

Is anyone growing Jalapeño x Reaper hybrids?

Ronnyb123.... I bought the reaper seeds from an individual online, so I don't know how reliable of a source they are. Fairly new to starting peppers from seeds, mainly Jalapeño, Habanero & Black Pearls. Aside from my usual BPP I decided to try some new strains this year, so I ordered Peter Pepper & Reaper seeds from different people.... but only the reapers took off. Of those, there were 10 seeds total, and 7 germinated (my 3yr old mutilated 1 before it got its 1st true leaves :-/). I'm definite that the other 5 plants are true Reapers, but this one particular plant has always made me wonder what in the world it is. It's a beautiful plant nonetheless, and I just now noticed that the pods, while still small are turning much darker, like a muddy purplish green. I've only ever grown the common green variety of jalapeño, so I don't think this is the same type. Are there purple or black jalapeño? On another note, I've also experimented cross-pollinating this plant to a BPP (I have 9 of those), so it should be interesting what I end up with. How do I know if pollination was successful?

Cindy- Yes, I sell at a farmers market year round. Just sold the last of my onions a couple weeks ago. I took early retirement a few years ago and bought a farm. Gardening has been a lifelong hobby of mine. I began by selling at my home town farmers market (from my backyard) for a couple years while still working full time.

Jalapenos are one of the easiest peppers I grow. They produce early and never stop until frost. I can't keep up with picking them late in the summer and I only grow one or 2 plants. I don't pickle them anymore but I do de-seed, chop, and freeze a few pints to use until the next season.

I just paid something like $1.08 for an 8 oz bag of jalapenos and that's really cheap for here!

HAH! lovemycorgi, I didn't know that and ended up with a very hot Italian Banana pepper that was suppose to be jalepeno. Now I know that I just didn't read the lable wrong.

yes, my plane jane sweet yellow banana peppers were labeled as such ... turned out to be hot yellow banana peppers. ... which is fine, but i grabbed one off the vine and took a bite. Suffice it to say, it bit back ... it was a shock when expecting the flavor of a sweet banana pepper. heh heh
