Satine - As someone who backed out of TKR last minute last Fall (for better or worse I decided I wasn't ready) I'll be most interested in hearing about your experiences. So I'll make you a deal: I'll trade you good thoughts and prayers for regular updates!

Seriously though, wishing you the best of luck. Accept your daughters' help, no need to be a hero, this won't be forever. It'll all be worth it when you're out of pain!

Knee replacement is apparently a new world not related to the old one. The surgeries are way more diverse depending on what they find and your healing and rehab will doubtless be way better than you think. Hopefully you will get the help you need from our benighted health care system. Lets remember that what we have is what too many people want until they need better.

My DH has had both knees replaced and it was much better than he anticipated. Don't be afraid of the pain meds, as they allow you to move and do exercises. In our province, you get two one hour sessions of outpatient physio where they teach you the exercises you need to do. I'll bet you anything that your post surgery post will say - that wasn't so bad! Good luck and do what they tell you - you'll be glad you did it.

Most of the friends I know who have had TKRs recently have done great. Some even had partial robotic surgery. They were more than ready, having planned way ahead and strengthened their legs to be prepared for rehab.

You will not regret it at all! The pain will quickly become a thing of the past! Follow all directions and do your PT. Also, use the ice machine-it is invaluable.

I had my knee replaced 18 months ago. I went to a surgery center to avoid going into the hospital overnight. Went home the same day, early afternoon. Used the walker for maybe two days, even though Ididn't feel like it was necessary. PT came to my house the day after (which was the worst day, so keep telling yourself that the next day will be much better).

Honestly, it was not bad at all. I even stopped the strong meds within ten days because I didn't like the way they made me feel and just stuck to Tylenol and an aspirin (not supposed to take them, but they work for me). Tossing and turning at night, not so much. Find a comfortable position and try not to change it if possible.

My son called me when I got home from the surgery and I told him that I felt terrific! He said, "Mom, that is the meds talking." LOL . He was right, but it didn't take long to feel pretty darn good. My DH did fix me meals which was nice and he hovered when I was on the stairs, but even that wasn't necessary after a week. Let your daughters help. We all like to be useful!

A few friends have had knee replacements and they were all so glad that they did. They're up a walking with a cane within 2-3 days and feeling pretty good within 7-10 days. My brother had his knee replaced and as his wife doesn't drive he found a physio that would come into the house which worked out really well.

I am so glad that you have an ice machine! When I had my shoulder surgery, mine saved me. It’s an Ossur Cold Wave…..very quiet, ice lasts a long time. I agree with the nurse about the pain relief.

Thanks for checking in on me. Im doing ok. The pain is what you would expect but the oxy and tylenol are handing pretty well. My daughter is with me and is cooking and taking good care of me. The ice feels really good. Unfortunately the nerve block they did in the or didn't work so they had to do it a second time. Not fun.

Glad you are home, with good support and are coping with it. Glad it all went well....except for that nerve block thing! Ugh!

OUCH! Sorry for the anesthetic problem. Are you able to sleep? Every hour passed is a little closer to feeling better. We know you're going to find this hard part very worth the long term result.
