I would net them now. I have black raspberries and blueberries in the same area under a PVC cage covered with birdnetting. The raspberries set fruit well before my mid and late-season blueberries and I have to get a net up before all of the blueberries have flowered. Bumblebees have a tough time getting through the netting, but other insects get in and I got plenty of blueberries last year. Before I started netting the raspberries I used to find a bunch of birds munching on them every morning. Now I get many more for me and my family.

Thanks for the encouragement folks! Lively - a mining company lied?? No way! (sarcastic) I feel your pain though. Having development next door all of a sudden would be a shock. Hang in there. I am trying Moskvich this year too. It was also our first tomato of the year and I like how big and fat they are. I have a whole pile of them on the brink of ripening and then I will bust out the BLTs! Ah, Sweet Baby Girl... that is such a wonderful plant. I'm glad you are also having good results with it Hudson. In addition to the fantastic taste, I can't get over how long the trusses are, each one with 20 or more tomatoes on it. I am so happy mine has recovered. Most of the fruit are still green but in another week or so it will kick back into production and we should be smothered in cherries for the rest of the season. Below is a link to a thread about the garden tour. (with lots of pics) It was quite a drama for me because of the intense effort to get ready. And then to be a hostess to 500 people! Phew. But now the place is so tidy and all kinds of odds and ends that were languishing are completed. So on balance it was a good thing. Melissa, I'm late to the party, but I'm glad you used the cheesecloth. My Squeezo/Villaware food mill does not get all the seeds out of raspberries, they are too tiny. It gets a lot, sometimes even most, but not all. Cheesecloth works better. As for rhubarb, I love it but it is definitely past season here in Michigan. I have mine stashed in the freezer, already sliced and ready for rhubarb pie at Christmas. And, here is my recipe for rhubarb/raspberry jam. Raspberry Rhubarb Jam 3 cups whole, fresh or frozen unsweetened raspberries 1 cup chopped rhubarb 2 Tbsp lemon juice 1 (1-3/4-ounce) pkg. powdered pectin, plus 2 Tbsp from another package, same size 8 cups sugar Rhubarb contains a lot of water. Before adding anything, simmer the raspberries and rhubarb for about 8 minutes, to allow the rhubarb to give up some of the liquid. Let the mixture cool. While the fruit is cooling, wash 9 half-pint jars. Keep hot until needed. Prepare lids as manufacturer directs. Stir the lemon juice and pectin into the cooled fruit. Bring to a full rolling boil that cannot be stirred down. Add the sugar, stirring constantly. Return to a full rolling boil, and boil for 1 minute. Remove from heat. Ladle the jam into one hot jar at a time, leaving 1/4-inch headspace. Wipe jar rim with a clean, damp cloth. Attach lid. Fill and close remaining jars. Process in a boiling water canner for 10 minutes (15 minutes at 1,000 to 6,000 feet). Makes 8 to 9 half-pints. Annie

I don't know about a juicer on soft berries - I use a fine screen strainer, just press the pulp through (it holds about 4C easily), work it with a soft spatula, then dump the seeds out and put new batch of berries in. I've only ever done this with cooked berries, haven't tried with raw. But makes a nice smooth product and I think easier to clean than a juicer.

I grow my raspberries - Raspberry Shortcake cultivar - in containers as well. Slightly bigger ones however....maybe 20G :-) Mine are well budded, flowering and berries forming but nothing is ripe yet. That's one of the disadvantages of living so far north.....everything is just a tad bit later to happen. I usually manage to harvest enough in one go to top my morning breakfast cereal. If they even make it indoors!!

This is heritage in a 5 gallon pot going into its 6th ish year. This is the best production by far. I am wondering if It will also produce on this year's canes. I almost killed it by overfeeding 2/3 years back when it seemed to be onto a glorious production. :( It lived and is finally getting to be worth the real estate it occupied on a 65 square foot balcony. I used to shove the branches outside the railings to decrease its footprint and it obviously retaliated by not producing much. It is getting good sun and space this time. I got 14 berries yesterday and 17 today. After a good washing by the rain gods they are perfect to gobble up, no cereal needed. I prefer dried berries on my cereal. 😊

Raspberries are productive and trouble free, I find. I started a few years ago with just 6 canes in the ground. I don't recall the name, but it's one of the Mallings. We've been picking for three weeks and are getting around pound a day at the moment. They are mostly going in the freezer because we can't keep up eating them fresh.
