May Night Salvia vs long blooming perennials
Comments (22)Interesting to read linnea's evaluation of Salvia nemorosa cultivars. I also have used those cultivars extensively, but don't agree as to which is the best, or at least which has been (performed) best for me. I have found May Night big and bushy. If it is true that May Night has the longest bloom time, that doesn't increase it's appeal to me. I want a mixed perennial bed to change colour (and overall height) through the growing season. There's a lot of different perennials to perform and some are more spectacular (I'd say) than Salvia nemorosa. I do agree about Caradonna's bloom and height. So far, I find it a bit narrow for it's height, but on the other hand, it then doesn't take up so much lateral space in (fits better into) a bed of closely spaced mixed perennials. As previously said, Caradonna seems to survive with a fair bit of shading. Personally I prefer the colour of Marcus and East Friesland, but I'm sure it's all a matter of personal taste (and perception - latter re documented variability in the perception of purple and blue)....See MoreTell me your fav long-blooming perennial
Comments (28)My favorite long-bloomer is a shrub, actually. It's pink cestrum, and a hummer favorite. This was planted in 2002 and has NEVER once been out of bloom since. Even for coastal Northern CA, that's an amazing feat. Sadly, they don't make good cut flowers, though. Outside of this, the oleander (flowers stay for 7 months) comes in second, and after that the roses, which bloom successively in flushes starting in March and going until December (but they slow down a lot starting in November). Roses never really go dormant, in fact, which makes it hard to figure out when to prune them here. Cestrum before I pruned back that weird overhanging branch, LOL: Close-up of flowers:...See MoreWhat perennial shade plants have a long blooming period?
Comments (0)Corydalis lutea and Corydalis ochreleuca both bloom from spring into fall. Dicentra eximina also blooms for a long period. The Welsh Poppy, Meconopsis cambrica will rebloom throughout the summer. Some Hostas bloom for several weeks (though some Hosta foliage lovers consider the flowers a distraction), dome Primula (primrose) bloom from March to May. Hellebores can bloom from late winter into spring....See MoreLow maintenance, long blooming perennial flowers for Zone 6?
Comments (10)I second the recommendation for the Rozanne cranesbill and coreopsis. Coreopsis come in different flower forms, all long blooming. I have had the best luck with a yellow threadleaf coreopsis called Zagreb. It's supposed to be extra hardy. I have also had bad luck overwintering Gaillardia. I had five Arizona Red Shade plants last year, and all of them died over the past winter. I also second the recommendation about the reblooming daylilies such as Stella D'Oro (golden yellow). They are very long blooming, and they should be fairly easy to find and probably cheaper than some of the fancier daylilies. There are other "Stella" varieties in other colours, too: I have purple and red Stellas. Up here, I see Stella D'Oro daylilies planted in places like shopping mall parking lot medians. That says something about how low-maintenance and useful these plants are. I doubt they get a lot of TLC in places like that, and they probably provide colour more cheaply than annuals that must be replaced every year. Some salvias are relatively long blooming, especially if you cut off the old blooms. Blue Hills salvia and East Friesland salvia have been good for me, but there are probably others that also bloom well. Salvia are pretty tough....See Moregetgoing100_7b_nj
