It’s not enough for the 8 foot side to pull chairs in and out comfortably. An alternative is to go to a wall to wall store and have them cut and bind a carpet in 9 x 9. Check the remnants section.

Go look at broadloom carpet at a carpet store. You can get perfect size and they can do a surge trim for edges. Works great and sone great options.

Would you consider changing out just your table? Chairs are lovely..and you would have a better fit with the china cabinet.

No, i am not changing my table This as a custom made set; the table is gorgeous. the set fits very nice, it is not cramped or tight. Size wise, we are okay. It is just finding a rug that is the headache.

What shape is the room? And why do you say 9x12 is too big?

I would probably do an 8x10 and not give it another thought.

A good carpet workroom can cut down almost any type of area rug that's tufted to the 9x9 size provided you select a carpet whose pattern can be cut down to the size you require.

I just checked on Way-fair and easily found some pretty 10 by 10s.

I would first order the smallest available to see if you like the color and texture. Much easier to return than a large rug,

Have you considered putting two of the chairs on either side of your china cabinet or in another part of your dining room until you need them for entertaining? It would give the table area some much-needed breathing room.

we do sometimes keep two chairs in the corners.. We flip flop with them depending on how we are using rhe space ( just us, company etc) We are allocating everything back into rooms after multiple renovations.

. Nothing is really back in its place yet.

i will look at 10 x10 on wayfair.

the room is just shy of 13 feet wide, 12.5 to be exact , so a 12 foot rug would be top big. I think it would feel like wall to wall carpeting.

i will also check out options of cutting down rugs as suggested..

I found 2 9x9 in a gray and white, / one was pictured in the mock up tester, but wasnt sure if it felt too blah….

maybe it is just how its viewed online and may look nicer in person (?) I will get small testers and see them before getting big ones. i do that as well, and it is a great suggestion .

You can also use painter tape to tape out the sizes on the floor to get a feel for the ratio of carpet to wall dimensions.

Tape off 8 x 10 on your floor and then pull the chairs out, and see if they remain on the rug while someone is sitting on them. That way, you will know, exactly what size you need.

I actually prefer no rug in a dining room for practical reasons. As well as trying to move chairs on carpeting.

I would check Wayfair as suggested. Otherwise, going to a carpet place to have something cut will give you lots of choices…in person.

What abour a round rug? i was playing around on rugs.com and I didnr think a round rug under a square table looked bad. (?) I rhought the round rig looked nice worh the round back if my chairs and could possibly be a shape that could work. what do you think?

got a few things moved around and back in their place. I ordered these two 9 foot round rugs and am waiting for them

to arriverice. Which do you think mat look nicer; the floral or the geometric?

When you are entertaining, 8 chairs at table will require larger rug IMO. I would do a custom size square.

thats just a mock up from the website. I dont believe it is true to scale i have to see how the 9 fits. I measured for a 10, but it seems like a 10 would be too big— would go under china cabinet.

i have to see how it fits, as I know rugs I have purchased in the past, are always smaller than advertised by 4-6 inches.

in that case, I may need a 10 to actually fit like a 9!

also, I looked into custom sizing , and they are very expensive - over $1,000. I do not want to spend that much, as I have a dog, and also, I have other things I need to budget for.

$1000 sounds a little high for getting carpet bound. That must be for a special order carpet? If you can find a carpet remnant you like, I think the price would be much more reasonable. Or try a different shop.

Thats the price where I am ( NY) I inquired at 2 local shops and both were same price range. Also, not many remnant pieces to choose from. Most were jiust solid. no luck there

Some on line shops offer custom sizing. Saw one just the other day. Might have been rugs-direct? That might be an option. Yes, you have to watch the specific sizes for sure on line. 8 x 10 can be anything from 7’-2” to 8’-4”. Every detail has to be checked. Smart on your part to be aware of this little annoyance.

No comment about the 9 x 9 Safavieh's I mentioned above? The big river had several.

Thank you for the suggestion.. It was a good one but, The evoke safaveigh rug had bits of navy blue in it. I dont have navy blue in my home. I have light blues . I saw some light gray/ ivory ones and ordered a similar one to ithe one you posted, and a geometric one. they came in round and square. Figured iI would trry the round and see how the shape looks. I thought that may be pretty and add some softness to the room instead of all the squareness. here is a pic of the kitchen/ DR. maybe a round will work, maybe it wont 🤷‍♀️

if i don’t like the round shape, i can get either of the rugs in the 9 square instead or something else if neither patterns look nice in person.

From that angle, a round might work better due to walkway to the slider. We will see.

I received a 9 round today. It is actually 8 feet 7 inches, not a true 9. safaveih is notorious for that .

anyway, I think I need a 10, foor. A 10 will fit and not be too big like I was worried about.

I think this pattern is nice, so it may be one that I choose, and since I now know a 10 will work, I will look at a few other patterns as well.

The round is interesting and easier for transportation around the space too. I think. 10’ round could be perfect.

got the 10 round today. much better fit and i really like the round shape. Its a keeper! Only thing left for DR is artwork to flank china cabinet , but DR is DONE!!

Thank you kindly Jilly. I just love the mix of round rug with the square table. It softens the feel of the room and frames the table beautifully I am glad I took a chance and mixed shapes. . .

I’m sorry, I don’t know what to do about those … others will, I’ll bet. :)

My experience has been the wrinkles stretch out over time.

I put books on problem areas for several days. Also, reverse bending of rug is key. Of course, that means moving furniture off. And then gently bending rug opposite of current curves. Hard to explain but I hope you can see what I mean.

.....do you have a pad under the area rug?

If not, get one and vacuum regularly to flatten.
