Design Ideas for a better front entrance please

I am stumped as to what to do with the entrance to the home we’ve just bought. After power-washing and painting, I do not plan to ever sit out front so seating doesn’t make any sense. Keep the planter or knock it down? Any other ideas? Thanks so much!

Ir looks hot and dry where you are. I would crave appropriate trees for shade and interest. But we have no idea where you are or your zone.

I would start by removing the two shudders. Regarding the courtyard, think about what you would like to see from the inside. If there is a lovely park across the street maybe it would be better to take it out, if it just opens a view to your neighbors driveway invest in landscaping and keep the wall.

Ooooh! I love the one AndiK posted. My idea is similar...couldn't find a photo, so I worked it up in my design software. It's just the interior elevation looking toward the door of the ante room so you'll have to imagine being able to see through the glass to your front door. If I find a photo, I'll post it later. I think I recall there being a nice door set up for the ante room in the movie Uncle Buck starring John Candy & McCaulay Culkin. I looked for a photo online of it with no luck, but you could probably rent the movie and check it out first hand. I thought the Home Alone movie house had one, but while they had the ante toom, alas there was no door on it--just a cased doorway. Hope this helps! Keep us posted on what you decide!

In the bed to the right of the front door (as you're facing the door) a small tree in the middle of that bed would really be nice. Maybe something 10-12' tall and wide. It would add needed height and anchor the bed. Then, plant things that provide seasonal display, some amount of fragrance, and bring color to that area. Google Monrovia, click on your zone and look at their suggestions for plants in your zone. Look on the web for examples of front yard landscaping and just copy those ideas. Nice house!

Hello! I’m submitting some inspiration pics to show you the shades of soft wood which would look great in your home! It’s a hard choice choosing between the table and the bench, I think a wooden bench would add more to the effect of rustic and help take the whole place away from the so formal structure it has, but then your entry does have that great art lighting fixture to highlight a piece really nice above a table. With a high gloss paint white on the doors, it could offer your home that nice shine look we all strive for, if your keeping them white. You have the setup for a nice piece of art with the light but I think a small gallery wall would look better, black frame, matted, black and white photo.

I wonder how it would look if you took the back wall of the planter down to the level of the front? Right now it visually cuts off the bottom of your window but it might be a nice feature if lowered.

If you like the privacy from the outside wall, make it into a lovely courtyard from viewing from the inside out. Add shrubbery and a nice fountain perhaps.

I like it ( with some modications ). i love courtyards in entries. if it were mine i would have pavers installed & have planters around either part of all of the perimeter along with a water feature . i had something similar in a previous home , i loved it, especially hearing the sound of the water feature from inside my home. i have an atrium entry in my current home with a water feature also. The wall planter provides some interest , definition & dimension to an otherwise flat fascade.

That atrium is a bit sad. I've always loved to sit outside in a garden (not in a gravel pit). If you planted it up, it could be pretty glorious. I'd be eating my breakfast in the courtyard garden, cocktails in the evening. If you're not sure if that's for you, but want to try it, get an abundant bunch of flowering shrubs and keep them in pots.

What's the view out of the window into the courtyard?

Thanks to everyone, I can definitely see the appeal to making it a lovely entrance to the home with native plants, perhaps a water feature and getting rid of the sad shutters to say the least. I think I’ll keep the planter wall and plant something pretty in it and a lovely garden area behind it. You all are awesome!
