now you know what it looks like you will notice it everywhere! id bet you have a neighbor with a patch. i cant believe this is the first time you've found it on your property because it is ubiquitious.

I just pull it out, making sure I get the root, and throw it in the trash. It pulls out fairly easily.

Yep, stopping future seed production is absolutely key to the long-term eradication of this annoying, but by no means intractable plant. It really isn't anything like as bad as destructive rhizomatous weeds such as couch grass...or deep rooted horrors like bindweed. It doesn't have a very persistent root system where any little bit leftover will re-grow - it is just a question of being consistent and, if you don't feel you can dig out every plant, at least chop the tops before seed is set.

Very reassuring - that it doesn't spread by rhizomes. We are pulling them out and before they set seed this year. As Marie pointed out, I'm sure there is a seed bank there. I think I will leave that area to germinate more seed and hoe them out when they come up and keep repeating that. I don't have plans to plant anything there this year.

If you keep pulling it while it is young, you can eat it :) Once it goes to flower it can get bitter enough that some folks don't like it, the flowers are more horseradish in taste. But do pull before it goes to seed if you want it gone.

Here in the states GM is intractable. It likes to grow in the same places our beautiful native ephemerals grow, and Ive seen it choking the ephemerals out. I agree with all the previous suggestions. Sometimes pulling them can disturb the soil and bring more GM seeds to the surface, so if you have it in your garden beds you should monitor the areas where you pulled it, and if there are small GM seedlings growing you can just scuffle them.

For as invasive as it is I find it to be one of the easier ones to Control. I wait until it blooms and then can yank it without bending so much, plus its easy to spot when in bloom.

We finished getting them all out yesterday.

I'll have to try adding some to my smoothie next time, thanks. Going to keep my eye out for the seedings and waiting until they bloom because you can see them better and pull them easier, makes sense too. You just have to pull them pretty fast because they form seed pods pretty quick. Wow - there are so many long seed pods too!
