Kitchens Design Dilemma Remodeling

Cabinet hardware- island and cabinets matching?

Hello! About to start a major kitchen reno and we need to pick out the cabinet hardware. I may be way overthinking it but I'm struggling to figure out what to do. We're going with a creamy white on the perimeter cabinets and a medium toned wood on the island (see pic, ignore the granite). We are going to have a black slider, black entry door, and black windows so I don't want to do too much black. I was going to go with brushed nickel for the cabinet hardware but I don't love how silver tones look on the wood of the island. I'm now thinking maybe I'll do black on the island and brushed nickel on the cabinets, all in the same style. Anyone have any thoughts or inspiration photos they may be able to share? Thanks!

I like polished nickel.
Or brass. Polished or not….
Either way, hardware can come last…(right before backsplash)
Order a few samples and test them out after everything else is in….

Sorry, ORB = oil-rubbed bronze! :) Our backdoor hardware is oil-rubbed bronze, which I hated at the start of our remodel, but which actually looks more at home now that it's done--it plays off of the black fixtures, I think. (We also replaced the door with a stained rather than painted door, which helped a lot too--so rather than "random finishes," we have the nickel on the cabinets, the ORB on the stained door, the brass on the painted doors/windows, and the black on the lights and accents (stove grates are black here too). Plus I totally forgot about the stainless hood, so yeah, we are not sticklers for matching finishes! (We do also have an older house, though, which I think gives us a little more freedom for finishes to vary than a newer house where everything was matchy-matchy to start with--even our windows and doors with original hardware vary in that some of the hardware and hinges have been painted over and are now "white" and some of the hardware is still brass.) Our kitchen is not open to any room except our breakfast nook, so we did match the fixture finishes there. But I don't think we needed to do that, necessarily. I would wait on your dining room fixture till the kitchen is done and see how you feel about matching versus not at that point.

Personally, I really don't care for matchy-matchy anything. Just as I would never match the fabric on my curtains with more than anything else in the room save for a couple throw pillows, I don't feel the need to match the finish on my lights with those on my cabinet hardware, doorknobs, etc. I do like them to be in the same family, though. For example, in my dining room I recently bought a wrought iron and crystal chandelier with a dark brown finish. The hardware on my buffet is a somewhat lighter brown, and my switch plates are of yet another brownish metal finish. Honestly, even if I wanted to match everything, I couldn't, unless maybe if I wanted everything in brass (which I don't care for anyways)-some things just don't come in an exact finish that one has prepicked. Sometimes I might even throw something with a black finish in there just for a twist. I am thinking of purchasing an upstairs hallway light that I really like in a black finish, even though nothing else up there has a black finish-I think it will look fine. I would characterize my decorating style as traditional decorator with a strong eclectic twist, btw. Anna C.

Does faucet taps have to match cabinet hardware OR sink/appliances?

Satin nickel would be fine with the stainless sink. Chrome (my personal preference) would work just as well. Black for cabinet pulls and knobs will relate nicely to the black counters. We have no clue what you need, or the style beyond "antique brass" in a faucet. "hardware can come last" I'd say that depends. My cabinet maker wants my hardware before delivery, so that they can drill the holes. (And I'd rather have them do that anyway.) Also, if you have any recessed pulls, the cabinet maker would likely need to know that as well.

Plus one to the comment about ordering samples! Colors online can be deceiving.

Brushed nickel will look good and yes, you can use black on the island.

Not a fan of brushed finishes - very 90s/early 00s. I'd do something polished or rubbed instead.

Search for a recent thread about cabinet hardward, one of the designers (Jan, I believe) recommends limiting yourself to three styles/sizes: for example, a knob, a pull of one size and then a pull of another size. Appliance pulls would not count. I think she's right about limiting types and sizes, particularly in your case, a kitchen with two cabinet finishes. Brass or gold would look beautiful on both white and wood.

If there’s pendants above island consider that finish too when deciding

Inset cabinet doors and drawers are set within the frame instead of resting on top as the more typically used overlay do.
