Need help re: where to end shower wall tile pls!

My master bathroom renovation has been a HORRIBLE experience. Wish I never started!

My new tile installer is incredible - he already installed tile in another bathroom for me + replaced slate herringbone floor.

He just came down to confirm where I want shower wall tile to end - at outer edge of shower curb OR have it die into door casing.

My thought has been to run it into the door casing because there’s not much room between end of shower and casing. My plan for the tile that extends to the ceiling above the door casing is to just have the edges of the tile polished (maybe slightly bullnosed? I guess that’s another question for everyone!)

Of course, I now have pulled up a bunch of showers - none like mine will look - and many have the wall tile ending in line with edge of curb. The ones I’ve pulled up all use trim pieces at end of tile run - but I don’t really like marble pencils.

My head hurts - I hate second guessing myself.

I’d love to have some reassurance about my decision - but I also welcome comments letting me know that I’ve made the wrong decision.

@Sabrina Alfin Interiors - I already found the tile liners that match my carrara marble! I was concerned about finding it easily because so much tile that’s labeled “carrara” is from China - not Italy (like my shower tiles). I thought I might have to special order them - but my friend who does a little interior design work called her friend in the tile business - and she has some that she can get to me on Monday or Tuesday!

Thanks for the suggestion! I like these liners SO MUCH more than the rounded pencil tiles!

I usually have it aligned with the outer edge of the shower curb and then you can set the shower door centered on the curb. How wide is your door trim? How much drywall would be left exposed if you ended the tile at the edge of the shower curb? If it's less than 2", I'd probably then abut the door casing.

Thank you for the response. Is glass block considered, what? Modern? I've seen it around for so long, I thought it was rather timeless. I'm not concerned with resale value, I just want to go with something I love. Agree about the brass, but it was standard and we were tired and tapped out from many other upgades. At least that's an easy DIY fix! I'm actually thinking of bronze or copper fixtures because the granite is Black Galaxy, which has copper flecks so I think one of those would look really nice. (It's hard to see the copper flecks in the pictures, but we did put in sconces over the sinks and under the lights they really pop.) Other thoughts/opinions?? TIA :)

Budge, THANK YOU. I think the window looks great with the tile and I'm going to have my contractor do the same thing. Did you use 6" bullnose on the inside of the window? I only ordered 3" but I think the 6" looks great. I wonder if I could use non-bullnosed tile on the inside of the window (run the same direction as yours) and put 3" bullnose on the outside, so that the grout line would be inside the window rather than outside...hm. I'd still need 6" bullnose for the top and bottom, but not as much. As for the bump in the wall, I went home and measured tonight and the brick does extend a good 4-5". SO, I'm stuck with the double bump. I think I am just going to tile over (to the ceiling!!!), inside and around the window and then start painting when I hit the bump. Thank you everyone for all of your help and great ideas - you all are the BEST!!!!

The height of a shower rod relative to the position of a tub is largely a matter of use and desired effect. Some shower curtains extend almost entirely to the floor while others drop just below the rim of an attractive claw foot tub. What is certain is the shower curtain liner needs to hang down into the tub below its rim so water does not splash onto the floor. Hanging a Shower Rod Shower curtains are commonly 6 feet in length from top to bottom. They are made longer as well. For custom bathtub designs, their length can vary greatly. If you are installing the shower rod anew and need to know where to hang it, the first thing to do is measure the length of the liner. If it is 6 feet long, figure that it should hang below the rim of the tub at least 5 inches. That means the rod should be placed 5 feet 7 inches from the top of the tub. However, consider the difference between the rod placement and where the liner attaches to the curtain rings. If the liner dangles 2 inches below the rod, you can add that to the height of the rod, placing it 5 feet 9 inches above the tub. The curtain also requires some consideration. It should not drag along the floor; rather, it should be at least 2 inches above it when hanging. If you want to showcase a claw foot tub, hang the curtain just a few inches below the rim of the tub. We have had the new tub in the living room for several months. The original plumber that broke the flanges will not return my calls. Not that I want him to install the newest tub since he broke the last one, but I am rather tired of paying twice for things. I have decided that I am going with Wedi board. Every tile "professional" I have talked to knows less than I do, and all I know is what I have read about in John Bridge's tile book, and the National tile book, and on Houzz. So, Wedi board will be used instead of concrete board because we will do it ourselves. The bathroom has been gutted for 12 months and we are tired of waiting. Here is my plan: 1. Put Wedi board on the back wall and on the interior pony wall. On the back wall, put the Wedi board so that it goes past the pony wall on the upper part. Put Wedi board on the shower head wall and pony wall where the skirt goes to the floor. Now, I still don't know for sure about where the tile will end. 2. I think the tile should go to the back side of the pony wall, where the Wedi ends and the drywall begins. A glass panel will go on the pony wall. I think I want to leave a ledge on the inside of the 6" wide pony wall, so the glass will not be centered. How far should the tile go past the vertical glass panel? 3. I think the ledge will need to slope slightly towards the tub. Maybe? 4. On the shower head wall that is 39" wide with a 32" tub width, that gives me 7" to play with. Should I take the tile to the corner or should I stop the tile at 37" or so? 5. Tile to the ceiling or not? The tile place that sold me the Wedi board said I didn't need Wedi on the ceiling, and they said tiling up to the ceiling or not was my choice. Thanks.

@Sabrina Alfin Interiors - I’m not at home right now (dr appt) - but I can go measure when I get back - if it’s not less than 2” - it’s barely over 2”. I am pretty sure that it wouldn’t be 3”.

If I run it to curb, would you still just polish all the edge tiles vs. using trim? It would be 33 pieces to polish which is quite a bit more - but like I mentioned above, I don’t really like the marble pencils.

I don't know what tile you're using, but you basically have three options for the exposed edges depending on the material:

1. Get bullnose tile

2. Use Schluter edging

3. Get matching trim pieces like a pencil liner or a bar liner

Some handmade tile like Fireclay Tile, for example, will allow you to glaze the edges so you won't have a rough exposed edge.

@Patricia Colwell Consulting - I’m not at home - so, this was the best photo I had to post.

If you look at the bottom right of photo - you can see the curb (it’s red).

It is a narrow doorway - but that’s the way it was originally built. The doorway is most likely staying the way it is - while it is a little narrow - it hasn’t bothered me at all for the past 26 years. It actually could be extended over little bit on the left side - but this is a support wall which would be more difficult to do. While I am 5’7” and 116 lbs, it also never bothered my ex husband either - and he is 6’3 and 190 lbs.

@Sabrina Alfin Interiors - it’s marble tile. I don’t really like marble pencils - that’s why I thought that having my tile installer polish the ends (or make them bullnose) would be a better idea.

HOWEVER - I am not a design professional! Do you think pencils look better with marble tile vs. having them polished/bullnosed?

Go with a bar liner, then. We did thassos marble bar liners in this bathroom with thassos marble subway tile. Hard to see in these photos, but that's what we used on the shower edges and the niche edges:

I'd be surprised if you couldn't get a bar liner to match your marble tile.

@Sabrina Alfin Interiors - I really like the bar liners! It is a clean look - and looks a little more uldated than using regular pencils. I really like how it looks on the pony wall!

I’m off to search for some bar liners!

Also, I really like how you brought the wood color from the vanity into the niche. Plus, having an unique layout of the tile makes it look special. Was each individual tile set by hand (not a mosaic pre set on mesh)?

@janellos - that is what I did in one of my other bathrooms that he just tiled a couple weeks ago. It’s a jack n jill type set up - has two doors near tub/shower combo. We ended the tile (Bedrosian Cloe white tile) against both door casings + used a schluter edge for above the door to the ceiling (the tile used in this other bathroom couldn’t be simply polished or turned into a bullnose like the marble can be). Yours looks like it works perfectly like that!

The mosaic tile came in 1’ x 1’ sheets, but the installer still had to match up the pattern.

In the instructions, they do give 2 alternative methods that don't involve the mesh tape. But I'm used to seeing the mesh tape method. I'm not a pro, but 2 tile pros form Cabot & Rowe built my showers with the mesh tape method and I trust what they do.

Are these alternative methods adequate? Curious what the pros on here think.
