When does hardy Hibiscus appear?
Comments (32)I've been following this thread closely and thinking about all of the different dates people are putting out here and their respective zones. I have several, and the ones that I've had for awhile leafed out almost a month ago. But I planted two as seedlings last year and I haven't seen any sign of life in them yet. So I bought a replacement for one yesterday. I'm going back and forth with whether or not to dig out the ones that didn't come back yet and put the new one in....See MoreJoe Pye Weed, Hardy hibiscus and Baptisia
Comments (14)We have Joe Pye Weed growing naturally along our creek banks (God planted it) and they have not begun to emerge yet but come back faithfully every year. I break down the tall dead branches usually in the fall or spring, whenever I get around to it. My hardy hibiscus has not begun to emerge in full sun in our butterfly garden. Last year, we had shoots up about a foot when we had a hard late freeze and they withered to the ground I despaired thinking it had killed the plant. Within another week, new shoots were there and the plant didn't suffer a bit. I can't testify to Baptisia as I have none. It's on my 'want' list....See MoreHardy hibiscus/rose mallow
Comments (21)Will, your hibiscus looks gorgeous and I so appreciate all the care and concern you've shown for it. It will be so pretty when it blooms! Now...a word or two about the Japanese Beetles. You may want to rethink using a trap as they supposedly attract more beetles to your garden. I attached a link with some good information about controlling the darned things that may be helpful. I've had good luck over the years using Neem oil products on the plants plus treating the lawn for grubs. Please post more pictures when your hibiscus is blooming. Comments (5)Um, we were talking about rules on another thread and whilst I feel rules are often there to be broken, I do attempt to follow a vague rule of thumb when it comes to moving, dividing or mucking about with plants...and that is - everything which flowers before midsummer can be easily moved in autumn...while plants which are late to flower (after21st June) are best left till spring. While some plants might be impervious (hemerocallis|), asters are usually unhappy to be meddled with in autumn - although I will make an exception if they are actually in full growth...as I have no qualms about lifting plants at the height of their bloom season...when they can click over back into root and vegetative growth when flowering growth is cut back. So...I would be moving the hibiscus (syriacus?) as soon as leaf break occurs in May....See Moreprairiemoon2 z6b MA
