I had inquired once on a piece of furniture (don't recall what it was at this moment) although it was not referred to as an "antique" in the ad, when speaking to the person selling it, she stated that "I dont know how old it is, but I know that it is very very old (I'm getting excited hearing this, thinking I've stumbled upon an antique or at very least a great vintage piece...then she continues, it's like from the 70's" My heart sank...lol, if that's REALLY REALLY OLD to her, then I must be a relic...barely alive in fact!!! I agree that if its a decent price, and it can work, get it. You wont see a piece like that at your local furniture store! I like it.

I would put in the 3/8 inch open caning. You can't "stain" cane. It's the outside of a stem like bamboo and won't take stain. It darkens naturally with age. I am older than your grandmother!! That chair was a generation older than your grandmother....more like 1910 to 1920. The clue to caning with premade cane and a came for the edge is wedges to hold the cane in the groove. They need to be blunted at the leading edge so they don't cut the wet cane when you push theme into the groove and with a wide enough angle so they hold the cane snugly while you stretch the other edge. Ha! I don't dare call my mother to tell her that I have found yet another one, and I NEED TO STOP! I truly have NO place for them, but the challenge and learning experience with each one is just what I love. And, just maybe, I'll learn something that can bring me a few dollars when I retire, although so far, I'd hate to give up any of my 'babies'. When I start tripping over them, it'll be easier to let go. :-) On the Antique form, I got 'Jacobean Revival', and I did find an image that is very close. Now that Mary Ruth has weighed in, I see another Antique Flemish chair (link below) that is also very much like it. This one that, gulp, yes, I am buying for $45, is oak. Bargain? What do you all think? The CL seller bought it to re-do, but has never gotten around to it. She is even including the fabric that she bought to re-do, which I have not seen, but she describes as 'nice, a rich looking tapestry fabric.' A friend who is in Northern Maine until Thursday AM is picking up this chair for me in our state capitol Thursday AM and bringing it to me, as he goes right through Augusta on his trip back south. jejvtr: What a pretty and unusual mirror. I would snap that up in a heartbeat if that were on Craigslist! (And, yours too, Red!) You are right the sideboards are quite similar. I have just fallen in love with antique mahagony. New mahogany just does not have that same vibrant look. Your mirror will look lovely raised up. What are the dimensions of your mirror? I think I'm going to buy the second one on Craigslist that I pictured on Monday that is 42x24. The gilt is brighter and is on a smaller scale than the first--plus original glass. I spoke to the lady and she seems in no hurry to sell which is great for me as we have guests this weekend and that is the soonest I can get there. If I get this one, this will make the second item I've bought in my home from children helping their aged parents downsize their homes. Kind of sad, at the same, time, I feel these people must've loved these items and would like to see them appreciated again.
