Please help me choose a climbing rose
Comments (12)'Laguna' is vigorous and I do not think it would fit into a space that size. Mine is 15' wide and 10' tall. Also nasty wicked thorns. (Otherwise it is nice.) Generally low and wide works better as a support structure than tall and narrow. Low and wide enables you to fan the canes out at a somewhat horizontal angle, which encourages more flowers. It also makes them much easier to trim and deadhead when you can reach most or all of the rose. If you have never grown a climbing rose before try to select one that doesn't have too many thorns. They are a lot easier to work with. Look at 'Jasmina' instead of 'Laguna'. Maybe 'Berries n Cream'. But on that structure if it was mine I would put a Clematis, not a rose....See MoreNoisettes/Climbing teas -please help me choose!
Comments (19)Joanna, My tolerance for BS and leaf loss may be higher than yours, but, I'll say what I've seen so far... The wichuriannas are near perfect...Paul Transon repeats a little. Blush Noisette is not looking good...spotty and leafloss, but, I believe it will take time to get going. Lamarque- some mildew, slow to get going, no bs MAC-some bs, some leafloss (30%) Crepuscule - succumbed to the goats...will get another Reve D'Or- may be mislabled, no diseases on what i've got Mme. G. Staechlin- no diseases, vigorous, once bloomer Blush Noisette- yucky so far Celine Forrestier- slow to get going, no problems yet Ghislaine de Feligonde-near perfect...heavy first flush and flowers the rest of the year off an on.. Aimee Vibert-don't have Gloire de Dijon-some spots, 50% leaf loss, succombed to goats, it has been replaced Souvenir de Mme. Leonie Viennot (not sure about this one)died after being moved...no problems when I had it SDLM (worried this may ball in my humid/hot climate)- so far so good, no major problems William A. Richardson -just starting to take off, no sign of disease Desprez a Fleurs Jaunes-just starting out, too soon to comment Duchesse D'Auerstadt-same as Jaune Desprez Sombreuil-some spots, 30% leaf loss Lady Hillingdon, cl- don't have it yet Paul Lede (disease?) don't have it yet Cramoisi Superieur, cl -no disease yet plus: Clair Matin some spots, 10% leaf loss, blooms constantly...a must have rose I hope this helps some. I'm really finding out that you've got to try the roses for yourself and see what you're willing to tolerate and what you're unwilling to tolerate. If a rose is vigorous and blooms and loses some leaves, I'm thrilled. I'm growing clematis through all these roses, so if they lose 50% of the leaves, and it doesn't slow the rose down, I'm fine with it. I will NOT spray. Comments (6)I tried many, many "shade tolerant" roses on the north side of my house. I get full sun for 6 months and shade for 6 months when the sun angle changes with the season, (my house interferes with receiving any direct sun at that time). There are no trees on this side of the house. I have never found a rose that remained happy or healthy in that situation. I don't think you should waste your money putting a rose there. Plant something that is pretty, and that will enjoy that spot. I have camellias planted now that are extremely happy, and look nice all the time. I am sure there are some native bushes, or some other types of plants that would love to be on the north side of your house. Then, if you have the room, plant some roses out in front of those, maybe with a little path in between, if there is some full sun there. The combination can be quite striking. Comments (8)I would suggest two roses, one on each side. You don't say where you are located, but in the southern states, You don't have to worry about enough sun unless there is deep shade. I have roses on the east side of my house that only get sun from sunrise to about 1pm then the are in shade with some refracted sunlight. They do very well. AM sun is better anyway. I can't help you with the brick clips. I have climbers against my house, but I put eye screws in the wood trim and attached wire to that. If you want a yellow rose, I can recommend Golden Showers. It's an older climber. The flowers are a bright yellow and open to loose flowers. The blooms do blow quickly, but there are so many of them, you don't really notice. When in bloom, there is a nice sweet honey scent. It does get BS if not sprayed. The foliage is deep green and shiny and sets off nicely against the flowers. Here is a picture of mine, I have it up against the corner of our porch. I have better pictures, but I can't find them right now. It's a rose that will bloom early in the season and then flushes throughout the summer into fall. You will want to groom it after the blooms fade to keep it in shape....See Moremjw0088
