Opinions on these tomato varieties!
Comments (26)Hi, Misty! ALWAYS nice to see you pokin' your head in around here! It's interesting that you left the ROCKY Mountains--and now you have ROCKY soil instead! I'm not so sure that's a good trade off! :-D But I'm glad to know you're still growing a buncha veggies! There's no food as good as home grown veggies--especially tomatoes! I don't know what they are, but the Pink Stuff they sell in food stores are not tomatoes! If you like Sungold, you REALLY should try Sweet Aperitif red cherry some year! They're "different" from Sungold, but they are BOTH To Die For! [Fedco--good seeds, good prices! Free shipping over $50 -- $6 under $50!] If you're in "eastern" Kansas, what town are you in/near? I'm asking because long, long ago, my husband's best friend--best man at our wedding!--was from Hutch--as in Hutchinson! And when he got married, his Intended was from Beatrice (Bea-A'-trice!), and my husband was HIS best man so we went back there for the wedding--the wedding was in Beatrice! Then, after they got married they lived on his father's (inherited) farm at Hutch, and one year we drove back there and stayed--in the olde farm house--for a couple nites and one day went out and waded in the Arkansas (Ar-KAN'-sas!) "river," which runs across the farm they lived on! It was great fun--except for the nasty, nasty "no-see-ums" that were biting us--no matter where we were! So I'm just wondering how close you might be to that area! Getting way off the tomato subject!!! Also! If you're close enough to St. Louis, have you ever heard of Cahokia Mounds??? It's right across the river (the BIG river--not the wading kind!) from St. Louis at Collinsville, Illinois! If you've never heard of it, search it (I recommend doing it on DuckDuckGo so you can actually SEE the "images"--since you can't anymore with google search!). It's part of the "Mississippi River Mounds Cultures", ancestors of some of today's "east coast" tribes (Creek, Shawnee, Seminole, and more!)--there are "ruins" that "look like" Central American ruins, but they're "made of earth!" If you're interested in "that sort of thing" I thought they were very interesting! If you ever go and you walk to the top of "Monk's Mound" (yeah, named by White Man!) you can "look across the river" and see St. Louis--that's how close it is to the river! I found the Ye Olde Folks thread on RMG (actually, I had saved a link to it--it's virtually impossible to find anything you try to search for on GW anymore since houzz took over!) and I'm gonna do a short post on it right after I post this, to bump it up! It was started in 2008! If you have "some time," check it out! I just reread virtually the whole thread again--Memories!!! Candy cigarettes and Burma Shave signs!!! Please do keep showing up here every now and then! You're Family, and if you have "garden"--or bird!--questions, we're still here with answers--even if you DO live in No-See-Um Kansas! Comments (18)I just dug out a bed of the Aloe saponaria so I will be bringing some huge ones as well as some pups. My mulchman, Bob, will be happy to load them in the back of the van since they were overhanging the walk where he goes to get the lawn mower. (I thought they were beautiful there ... but oh well :-) They will live out of the ground for several weeks, or even months maybe, and even bloom sitting out, so no problem with not having them in a pot to bring. Anyway, Red Geranium and anybody else that wants some bring a big box or you can just lay them in the back of your car. Bring some newspaper. I love to give away plants, but that's about all I am bringing as my knee just doesn't let me stay on it for long, so I haven't been potting stuff up. Maybe by next swap I'll have a 'new' knee. I have another appointment with the othopedic surgeon next week. See ya ......See MoreFOTESS April 2022: Jug Face planter
Comments (204)Ruth, I just returned home from my MN trip. Yes, my Clematis plant from Bluestone arrived this past Monday. I have somebody who comes in to water etc, when I am gone, so I had tipped her off that something was coming from Bluestone. She opened and watered after it arrived. It was supposed to come the previous Friday but did not. My buddy said it was in very bad shape on arrival. She followed the the after arrival directions. There is some new growth starting so I think she will be fine. I am so excited about Clematis nubia.....5 inch velvet red flowers. Thanks so much Ruth for this very cool plant!! Enjoy your trip.....be safe!!...See More2023 Spring Plant Swap???
Comments (11)Hi Camille/Arborwolf, I was planning to get here to post sooner, but other stuff has been happening and I just didn’t get it done! I’m sure there are people around here who’d like to have a swap again, but I’m not sure, based on the fact that this post hasn’t received more of a response by now, if they’ll see the post about a swap or not. Since houzz took over GW/RMG there have been fewer and fewer people posting around here, and as “old” members “go away,” only rarely does a “new” member show up since GW/RMG almost never shows up in search results anymore since houzz—so “new people” don’t seem to find us anymore! You may have noticed that there are VERY few posts anymore! So! Having said all that! If you’d like to go ahead to see how many people show up and express an interest in a Spring Swap this year, here’s what I recommend! If you already have a date you’d like to have it, start a new thread with a subject something like: SPRING SWAP 2023 – SA? May ??, 2023 at 00:00 a.m. It doesn’t need to be May, but that’s when the spring swaps have generally been in the past. Other than that all you’d need to start the thread is that you’re planning to host it in Berthoud, and maybe give an “approximate location” with “main streets/roads” near you—don’t post your exact address here online. OR – If you don’t have a particular date in mind I’d suggest starting a new thread with a subject something like this: SPRING SWAP 2023 – When should we have it? And then post the day/dates that will work for you if it makes any difference to you, and ask people what days/dates will work the best for them. I’d add to that post, like I said above, that you’re planning to host it in Berthoud, with similar “location info!” You really wouldn’t need much more in that post, just enough to see if enough people see it and respond with dates or ideas to find out if there’s enough interest and response for it to actually be feasible this year. If you have any other questions before you start a new thread, post them here and I’ll try to get back within a day to answer them for you. And if/when you start an “actual swap thread,” as in my first suggested “new” thread above, I’ll jump in as soon as I see it and copy/past all the Swap FAQs for you—to answer questions for anybody, especially anybody who’s “new” and has never been to a swap before! Since there have only been a few people who have responded to this first thread that you started a few months ago, I’d say that the most important thing right now it to try to get a feel for how many people will see the tread and respond that they’re interested in coming! There will definitely not be as many people as were at the swap up there in spring of 2015—there just isn’t enough action around here anymore to get that many people. And if it turns out that there is a swap this spring, and as long as it’s on or before the weekend of SA/SU May 20/21, I’ll be there! After that I’ll be “back on the other side of the hills” for a while!!! I’ll watch for specific questions if you come up with any, Skybird P.S. I'd like to add my condolences to both you and Lucy in the loss of your sister, Gloria. I'm so sorry you lost someone so close to you--I hope you're able to remember and share "the good times" you had with her, to honor her and keep her alive in your hearts.
