I have converted to the Breeze system. It has changed my life!

I don't currently have a cat, but have had several. I'm not sure when we started using them, but one of our last pair was a messy litter box user (female who would spray -- we had to use a covered box), so we used them to help capture and contain some of the mess. We'd occasionally get a tear in a liner, but those were usually above litter level, so they were still worth it. And they do make changing the box much easier -- cinch the bag up and toss. If you see a tear, you can take the whole box to the trash can and quickly dump -- still easier. You know your cats' antics better than anyone, but you can probably find a small box to try out. I'm pretty sure we bought them at Petsmart then.

You remind me of one of the two reasons I do not want a cat -- litter boxes, Hairballs being the other one. But Lulu is not too interested in other dogs. Sh. e does love to play and .one of the reasons we thought she would be a good fit is that she was cat safe if not cat friendly. Then I saw this video -- wonder if Lulu might be so inclined.

No liners, not necessary.

They needed taping down, they tore, they leaked, they didn't do anything but annoy me and the cats.

Cat litter is absorbent. Anything that hits the bottom of the box will be absorbed by the litter. I haven't used liners in 15+ years and nothing sticks to the litter box. They clean up beautifully.

Good litter does its job. For me it's World's Best Cat Litter.

I don't use any liners....just use boxes with higher sides, have plenty of scoopable litter in the box and it seems to work. We wash out the boxes a couple of times a year but for the most part, they don't need it.

I'm not a cat expert, but I have been on a litterbox odyssey since a horrible occurrence of urinary crystals/blockage with our year-old cat that my son found as a kitten.

Suffice it to say that I spend an inordinate amount of time checking his litterbox, cleaning it, etc.

I invested a ridiculous sum to purchase stainless steel high-sided litter boxes, and they are worth every penny. The cheap plastic litter scoopers sold in the grocery store seem to be designed perfectly to scoop the corners of these perfectly made SS litter boxes.

I did try the liners, but exactly as @Bunny stated, they tear, they never fit ANY of our litterboxes correctly, and I had to tie off the corners and it was more trouble than it was worth. It is far easier to hose off the SS in the driveway..

I’ve never used liners in 45 years of having cats. In the prescoopable days we just dumped it all and washed the box regularly - two cats back then. Scoopable is so much easier - scoop it into a covered pail with a plastic bag inside and put the bag in the garbage when it’s getting full. We do have the luxury of an unfinished basement where the two big, high sided litter boxes reside.

I don't use liners either. Even though I keep my cats’ claws trimmed, I suspect they would rip through any liner based on the enthusiasm they have for digging and clawing the sides.. Our female just tends to just claw the side of the box rather than the litter. We were using clumping corn litter, but switched to silica gel after we moved. It absorbs the liquid rather than clumping, but we have to stir the box frequently.

@Mrs. S I’m also curious about the stainless steel boxes. Is there a good brand? Do they have high sides?

I do recommend the biggest size, and our kitty is small. I can’t imagine having a really big cat, haha.

I miss having cats, but at a certain age (around 40, I think), I became allergic to them, and my allergy is now pretty severe. No amount of antihistamine can alleviate my allergies now.

We have neighborhood cats visit our yards here, and one especially likes our back yard. She seems to want to come into our house, but of course I cannot let her. I've also seen her at our front door, and she has looked at me like she wants something, but I cannot feed her, or else she might become to attached.

When I had four cats, I converted to the Breeze system. It was awesome. DS's family has two Siamese, and once they were old enough, he purchased the fancy/expensive automatic litter box. He said it changed their lives. :D

Before Breeze, I briefly used liners. They did not tear.

I have sworn off ever having a cat again. I despise litterboxes that much. This coming from 40yrs of being an adult owner.

I use the liner in our one litter box for two cats. I scoop it regularly. One of the cats like to go in a corner and I just lift the bag/liner att the edge and it comes loose in a clump and makes it easy to scoop. Then at the end of the week I just pull the string together and take it out to the trash. I use the Jonny heavy duty kind and have had no issues with them. Ours doesn't seem bothered by them and wasn't bothered at all when I switched them to clumping litter. Before I used wood pellets that I would shake the shavings through a sifter and empty out. The liner and clumping litter is much easier.

I have 2 jumbo, high-sided litter boxes, 3 when my daughter's cat is visiting. They're in my office, next to my makeup station. Hey, it's a multi-purpose room. Bessie's poo time seems to coincide with my makeup time. Lovely.

If you have enough litter in the box the clumps won't stick to the bottom. The only time that happens here is when we let the litter level get low because it's time to clean the box -- something my husband does ever couple months.

We have two high-sided litter boxes - one downstairs and one upstairs. We use a good quality litter (I think DH is still buying World's Best, or maybe Dr. Elsey's - can't recall). Have never used a liner, but scoop daily, of course, and sometimes twice daily depending on the "load". Litter is added as needed, since we have one who tends to want to dig like there's buried treasure. Every so often the boxes get a complete clean-out, dumping the old litter, washing the boxes, and refilling with all new litter. This works for us and our four cats, although I'm fully conviced that living with cats is never going to be fragrance- and mess-free at all times. It's a good thing they're cute.

Cats don't extend their claws when they are in the litter box so I think the heavy-duty liners should hold up.

We have 5 cats and 7 litter boxes. I have not tried the heavy duty liners you mentioned, however, I tried standard liners years ago and found them lacking for all the reasons already mentioned. If I had a single cat that squatted and walked away without scratching everything in sight I might be tempted to try them, but we have a couple of diggers.

Aside from litter, I've been battling cat hair. We took in a long hair cat a year ago and the hair is driving me batty! It's sticky, like spider web, and gets stuck to everything. I recently got two floor standing air purifiers to help with cat litter dust and hair, but haven't noticed any improvement.

We didn't have an issue with tearing, but other than helping catch drips (we had have the liner go over the side and fold up), the thing I liked best about liners was reducing the dust because you just close it all up. When we last had cats, there were new litters, but ont of mine would only use a single brand of unscented and we dare not change it. I know I will have a learning curve if we get a kitten - and I am definitely going to look into a stainless litter pan.

I have two cats, both rescues. No liners. We scoop once a day, 5:30am. YOU need DEEPER litter. There's nothing stuck to the bottom, sides, or corners of the litter boxes. Aspen goes immediately after the box has been cleaned. Ivan, used to, past tense, use his litter box as an only toy. He dug, dug, dug...as a form of exercise and play. Every once in awhile he reverts back to that enthusiastic digging, I yell his name, it pulls him out of it, he always comes when called. He has lots of toy baskets all over the housel He loves his pink-puffy balls & laser pointer.

We have covered litter boxes. @Bluebell66: Edited to add: I brush them both twice a day. 6am & 6:30pm Aspen is long haired. His fur is very soft and fly-away. .....Sticky like a spider web....yeah...it's hard to get off my fingers.....I see that. Takes a quick minute or two....I tap the comb on the table and they both come running. We use dust free, bulk, clay litter from Petco, 30lbs for $11. We only change the 2 boxes once a month.

We have this X-Large stainless steel one with the high sides. It’s much easier to clean and the high sides have cut down on litter escaping the box. A metal scoop is good too.

We use World's Best and have to clean it On Demand if she poops. (If it's the middle of the night she doesn't make you clean it right then but she lets you know anyway). She is a little more flexible about clumps. But it gets cleaned several times a day, which is a lot considering we both have jobs.

But she has been going crazy scattering litter which involves extra sweeping (A litter-only broom and dustpan.....yeah) so I may look into that litter box.

The guy who paints for me has a "occupancy sensor" light and exhaust fan for his cat's litter box.

I have super large and tall convered litter boxes. The base is not super tall but the lid is. I have tried other types of litter boxes and they just would not use them. They would stick with the one as described (tall and with a lid).

I also have tried various pellets and such and they do not go for that. One cat has claws the other two do not have front claws. They have NEVER been outside.

I think for fun I will just try the super strong (hopefully) liners and see what happens.

I hear you guys on the sherr pain of dealing with litter, hair and all the rest that comes with having cats. It is not easy.

I will keep you all posted on how it goes.

I used a liner once decades ago. Never again. I've used plastic boxes with high sides. Eventually, all plastic boxes need to be replaced. Urine eventually damages the plastic even if you have religion about cleaning. Last year I bought the small version of the Less Litter stainless steel box. It cost the earth, but it's really easy to wash. The only negatives are the price and how heavy it is. I wasn't sure how the cats would respond to a round box but they didn't object. I use Dr. Elsey's unscented litter.

I will check out that litter! I despise and so do my cats any scented litter. I can not even handle when a garbage bag that has a scent to it is in the other room!

@moxie, I am going to start trying out that litter! It looks amazing and it is so well priced! I will just start slowly integrating it into their current litter.

I read that cats far prefer clay to regular litter. The are weird about change but I am going to slowly wean them off of the regular litter if at all possible.

Hahaha! I swear sometimes Mila would use a bulldozer in the litter box with all the excavation going on...I have no idea what she's doing...and it's usually at 4 am! Then she thumps. I don't know if she's shaking the litter off her paw or what but I hear a very rapid thump/thump/thump/thump on the side of the box.

I thought clay was regular litter.

World's Best is made from corn. I love the smell of it right out of the bag, like passing a pipe tobacconist shop.

I tried one of the Dr. Elsey litters recently. It was in a bag with a blue design. It was clumping but it had larger flakes of litter like clay non-clumping and was so darn dusty!
