Need help finding a floor color for kitchen with orange-y cabinets

We're refinishing floors on the first floor of our house, which is only 3 rooms: kitchen, LR, DR. We think that the kitchen floor is red oak, and the other rooms are white oak. The colors we gravitate too are cool tones, medium - medium/dark browns. For example - Minwax Dark Walnut; DW-Ebony mix, DW-Ebony-Classic Gray mix, Varathane Espresso (all ideas we poached from photos). Minwax Aged Barrel and DuraSeal Heritage Brown also look nice, but aren't available in sample sizes.

The problem is that the kitchen cabinets are orange-y (though the wood itself is beautiful). The many photos i've looked at show cabinets and floors matching, or at least in the same color family, similar to what we have now. We'd like the same color in all three rooms and prefer it not to be in the yellow/orange/red family. But I'm having trouble visualizing our kitchen with one of the floor stains mentioned above. I'd really appreciate any suggestions. Do you think the dark browns we're looking at would look ok in the kitchen? What other stains/colors should we consider? Thank you!

I think you can have the floor color you love with these cabinets as long as you include the color of the cabinets in your accessories.

I would not try to match the floor to cabinets.

Definitely not gray for floors.

Have you spoken with a floor refinisher? are they in great enough shape to sand all floors and just put on a clearcoat? too dark shows dust, but would be a great contrast.

In my last house, I searched for the perfect "dusty pumpkin". It ended up being, for me, Laura Ashley 'Spice' (mixed in SW paints). You can find the paint chip at Lowes. It's going to be a strong contender in our new house's kitchen (w/ "antique" cream cabinets)....along with other muted, browned-oranges.

Look at SW Evening Shadow (SW 7662) it is a nice light grey. The problem is if you are looking at a sample in a room that still has that some of that yellow/orange paint on the walls it will reflect the color and make the grey look different that what it will look like when the entire room is painted. Your floors will look better when all that yellow and orange are gone.

Hi Patricia, The flooring in the entire condo is the same, which is a Sapele species. It has a reddish tone so I'm trying to find something similar as I find not many colors matches the cabinets.

Since you gravitate towards cool tones, your cabinets can be toned down with a cool toned floor. I'd avoid dark colors as you have black countertops. Have you considered white oak floors?So much depends on the room light., be sure to get samples to your home. Good Luck.

I had same cupboards and floors then i refinished the floors to natural State they were beautiful but then I still had orange cabinets the cabinets I did uppers in white it helped some the the killer in the room was still the orange cabinets don't do one without thinking about the other and dark floors are the worst for cleaning

Beveryly, thank you! I like the Dark Walnut, Medium Brown and Coffee Brown. Also the 2 stains in the last photo. Do you know what they are?

Lynne - thank you. We definitely don't want to match the cabinets! I think the floors are probably in pretty good shape. The floor in each of the 3 rooms is a different age. The wood in the LR & DR is white oak. We think the kitchen is red oak, so it might be too red (for our taste) for just a clear coat. We'll see after sanding.

ffpalms, the juxtaposition of the photos with the kitchen is very helpful. I don't know how to do that, I was just happy i figured out how to upload the kitchen photo. :) I like the stain colors, do you know what they are? Thanks

Barbara, we do have white oak floors in the LR and DR. We think the kitchen is red oak, but we'll know for sure after sanding. We're not going to put in new flooring. Hoping to have the floors in the 3 rooms the same color, even if we have to adjust the stain mix to accommodate the 2 woods. Is the wood in the first picture Red Oak? I think the graining on our kitchen floor is more like the White Oak picture.
