Big loss, great sale
Comments (3)I knew of the loss of Hank, but I'm not aware that they are struggling. I believe they have a capable crew, but I may be out of the loop on that. Their current sale is in lieu of previous fall's 'Dog Sale's. They advised me of this in August at the HPS/MAG Valley Forge sale....See MoreGeneral loss of variegation as trees age?
Comments (12)i said: so all variegated plants.. over time ... will try to revert to its strongest option ========= i swear i put enough qualifiers in there .. lol .. key word: TRY in a hosta.. that could mean 1 to 5 years ... in a conifer ... that can live 100 years... that might take 100 years ... whether or not you have seen it with your eyes.. does NOT dis-prove the POTENTIAL to revert.. or regress ... BTW... a YELLOW skyland is NOT a variegated plant ... i though we were talking about a plant with two colors of tissue ... i have had ... on multiple conifers.. have every single piece of white tissue on a green plant.. burn off year after year from winter burn .... sooner or later.. it quits putting out white tissue .... yellow tissue is a more hardy .. but still burns off ... deciduous trees obviously avoid the burn issue ... though my tri color does tend to melt off the white edge in the high heat of summer ... its best color in at flush in the cool spring .... anyway.. great debate ... ken...See MoreWinter losses gallery, 2011
Comments (16)I have a problem with my 4 ft Chamaecyparis thyoides 'Top Point'. I got it from Greers 2 yrs ago, looks now close to a skeleton, will give it another month to show new growth. It does not have a girdling root, I checked, and I sprayed it last year against insects, does not seem to have scale. Last summer it had a huge crop of cones. My 1 yr old, 1 ft tall, Abies koreana 'CIS' got all upper foliage yellow, has still some green lowers. I will wait into June before making a decision. As dcsteg Dave says, Abies koreana in zone 5 is only marginally hardy. Though my A.k. 'Green Carpet' is doing fine. We must have had a very cold winter compared to past years. I.e. my large magnolia only has a few flowers, all through the area only the lower branches of forsythia have flowers. My 'CIS' was in a chicken wire cage filled loosely with bark chips. Most of the winter it was covered with 2 ft snow. : ( Bernd...See MoreConifer spacing and pruning advice from an old conifer friend
Comments (5)Another four plus inches of rain in the last 48-hours. Our local FD weather station has recorded over 21" this month - it's just incredible. There hasn't really been a single dry day all month and most days are just drenched with heavy rains for hours on end. I've lived in the PNW for a long time and this is the wettest month I can remember. I'll have to pray the giant doug-firs behind my house hold on tight - a few of them are 100'+ and would go through my house like a knife to warm butter. Tom, no freezing here yet, many of the trees still have leaves - some are even green still as these warm storms bring 50 degree days on a regular basis. Coldest temp my weather station has recorded this fall is 35 degrees....See Morebengz6westmd
