yet another stair remodel question
Comments (5)thank you both for your input...love the picture with the wood landing....but debrak makes an excellent point...when we changed out the stair treads, my contractor said the top step was a half inch lower that the rest, so he corrected that... i was amazed at the number of times i caught my foot going up stairs (such is muscle memory) he warned me to be extra careful and that i would probably find it awkward, and he was right! i was leaning toward a very, very low pile or even sisal, so hopefully the transition would not feel too weird...i only have 13 steps there are 2 pie steps which turn onto the (very smallish) landing.. those pictures help a lot!...See MoreDaisyAdair: Stair question for you, please!!??
Comments (10)Les, I think that is what we are going to have to do, and allnighter. Nothing new, actually, that is/was the only way we ever got anything done around here when they were babies. They are all in bed by 8pm, so it could definitely work! I read an article that suggested the every-other-step technique, but I still don't think my kids would follow that LOL!! Not that they are old enough to, but they would just forget and be trampling all over them!! My plan for today is to get the paint from SW for the treads (we are using the same Swiss Coffee on the risers and balusters that is already in the foyer). I am getting REALLY excited, but very nervous at the same time! I founf this pic on RMS of someone who also did this... looks beautiful! She used a black, which looks stunning, but I still adore the black-brown route:...See MoreStaircase finishing question
Comments (4)DH did our staircase in oak (it was pine) and covered in shag carpet :/ He removed the old pine treads and put in new oak stair treads. The old pine risers he left in place and installed oak over them (making necessary adjustments for the treads). Here's some pics, if you want details, let me know (or email me), I'll ask him ;) After ripping out carpet, old wrought iron rail and pine treads/risers: The new oak railing (stained to match new hardwood floors): Finished treads/risers (kept original stringer, I painted it white because all our new trim/doors are white. A relative painted their stringer to match the wall color, and looks good done that way, too.)...See MoreQuestion about stair treads.
Comments (5)I've done this twice - I riped vinyl type flooring off one set of stairs, and carpet on another. At the first house, it was soft (read: dog nails scratched the heck out of the stairs) pine. So, I took thin planks of an oak veneer, painted designs for the risers(hey, I was young) and glued them back on. The biggest issue was joining the rise and the run, and I used a L piece of moulding to cover the line where they joined. Only problem that I had was that I used pine moulding, which was got beat up in no time. At the second place, I was lucky in that the treads were solid maple, and I tiled the risers with a nice Italian floor tile (border height so that it fit, displayed a pattern, etc). I now have carpeted stairs again, with builder rough lumber underneath. To make matters worse (or, more expensive), my railing spindles are attached directly to the treads, so railings would have to be adjusted etc if I were to replace the treads or try to cover them with hardwood. My hardwood flooring installer suggested hardwood veneer on the risers, and recarpet the treads for a new look........See MoreLaney
