Comments (25)'You can dump tons of organic matter in the garden and wait for it to decompose into forms the plants can use, or you can use "chemical" fertilizer, which is already in a form the plants can use. Same food, it's just one sounds better to certain people than the other. Either way, the plant gets the same nutrients if you know what you are doing.' well, yes.....and no. We could, presumably, apply the same formula to ourselves, (and some people do) simply adding a few vitamin pills to make up for dietary deficiencies. However, soil is not some inert substance which just needs a boost now and then - it is a living, breathing, changing substrate. Organic matter affects the very structure of the soil - there is NO quick fix to supply a good humus filled environment. So, on one hand, I can state that I do not fertilise (as such) but I do leave a good layer of pulled up weeds underneath the plants and add copious quantities of compost mulch. Apart from a little extra nitrogen, the soil fertility is not really bumped up by doing this but, it allows for a free passage of fungal and bacterial help, mycchorhizal hyphae attach easily to the roots of plants, worms and beetles provide aeration....and so on. The question is either incredibly complicated, or blindingly simple and obvious, depending on your philosophy or belief in a natural equilibrium....See MoreGetting chilly in New York City
Comments (23)Valentine: thanks for those detailed tips! So you suggest I put the rosemary on the windowsill inside or outside? And if I wrap it with bubblewrap, do I wrap the plant too, or just the pot? (It's an old giant tomato sauce can from Lombardi's Pizza) Oldrose: My window faces southwest, but because of all the buildings around me (I'm on the second floor) light doesnt last very long :P So I'm in California now guys, San Jose visiting some old friends and it is COLD out here! Something is really up with the weather--this past month has just been World Natural Disaster Month. For the love of Al Gore, let the government set standards already and stop this madness! I came out to Cali for a tan!!! ;)...See MoreGardening magazine season
Comments (2)I've been trying to think of decent ones - for a while there I had a deal that every time I renewed my newspaper subscription, I got a free magazine subscription, and I always picked gardening mags. But none of them really were worth actually paying for. Sunset was the last one, but once again, it really didn't fit with anything I'd actually do - But maybe it's just me, but I've steadily cut down on the number of mags / papers I subscribe to, and I'm now down to a couple of local and regional newspapers, no magazines left - I realized I hadn't tried a single recipe in about 5 years from the cooking mags, and I wasn't likely to go to any of the restaurants they reviewed, palm trees don't grow here and I really don't want a whole garden full of potted cactus, and so on. Now, I just spend way too much time on the internet:-)....See MoreTraditional Modern Pearl White Kitchen in New York City
Comments (66)It is SO nice to see a small kitchen designed so beautifully! It is wonderful! I was always a "wood" girl, but in the last couple of years have gotten so tired of my old oak cabinets (but have no budget for replacement) that I think I'm going to paint them. Either a creamy white or a light gray/green. Most people (including a good number on this site) have no idea how small some real kitchens can be! Mine is barely 9'x10' but because the adjoining dining room is also small it really leaves no room for a proper island. Unless I do THAT room over too and that's not going to happen! But maybe I need to brainstorm to find a way. Thanks for the inspiration!...See MoreMarie J.
