Paint Porches & Decks Design Dilemma

Need help with a porch color/layout!

last year

We recently moved into an 1870s farm house and are looking to repaint the porch and add furniture. It's currently a chocolate brown color with sage accents. There is benching all around the perimeter and a small stone patio off the side where we have some lounge seating that was gifted to us.

Our plan is to paint the house white, but that is a project for next year, and wondering what we can do to the porch now (if anything). Also where and what furniture to put on it. Thank you!

is it a composite material?

I would not paint it, give it a good cleaning,

and get a couple outdoor rugs and create areas of use, seating cooking, sunning... with moveable planters.

The deck looks like it is in fantastic shape. The redwood may not be trendy, but it will blend beautifully with the woodland around you. Such a gorgeous yard. I agree - bring in fun colors with your furniture, removable seat cushions and pillows in outdoor performance fabrics such as Sunbrella. Buy some inexpensive outdoor serve wear in fun colors. Enjoy the outdoor space! If it is real wood, I would be careful about placing outdoor rugs on top because the decking finish can peel or even rot. Yes, learned that one the hard way :)

Chris, I'm in TX. Meant to be a lil 'inside joke' some forum members who know me know I've developed several color palettes and specialty color tools. Like a palette of just blues for certain applications, like porch ceilings. So that's why in my color world -it doesn't matter where you live- porch ceilings are blue. :)

Metal is for the porch only and is purely for aesthetic value. I'm in the Pacific Northwest, so I'm not too concerned with reflecting the heat, even though it might help some in our warmer months. A white roof just won't work for us, but thanks for your input. I do appreciate it.

Need kitchen layout help and cabinet color suggestions

Even though you already have a design for your kitchen (or at least concept), I have been playing with the layout. Trying to open up the walkway from sunroom to front door, so you wouldn't have to go through the kitchen (as in: inbetween countertops). I know dutch kitchen designs are quite different (is often see "european layout"; tall units with appliances and an island with sink and cooktop), but other views might just give you creative ideas. Here's some stuff I came up with: 1. Closing off family room doorway (moved it to the sunroom), new basement door, new pantry, fridge where old pantry was, free walkway from sunroom to front door. 2. "European layout" with fridge and oven(s) in tall units, row of shallow units along the garage wall. Added a bit of garage to the kitchen (top right) to create better flow. 3. L-shape and tall units with fridge, oven, plus a bit of countertop to make some coffee/drinks. 4. A more US looking kitchen, I guess? A closed kitchen means less cooking fumes in the rest of the house. I do like the windows between kitchen and sunroom you already have. Also added a bit of garage to the kitchen (top right) to create better flow. 5. Island layout. No enlarged pantry, but an extra larder unit next to oven and fridge.

Some thoughts: --Any chance you can pull up the indoor/outdoor rug and paint the floor? What's underneath. If you can't paint the floor, then layer a light colored indoor outdoor rug in the living area. If you can paint it, say a lovely blue, then put a patterned indoor-outdoor runner connecting the two screen doors. Consider getting a synthetic or wood frame with a very cushy seat cushions that you can pull off and wash. You could go wicker again unless you still have the cats. Replace curtains with natural bamboo shades. Note the painted floor. To gain some space, consider building a long storage bench (for cushions in winter/rain) along the left wall with chairs pushed in.

I like the fire pit idea on the lower level. On the deck itself I would do comfy seating like an outdoor living room on one side and then a really lovely table and chairs on the side by the bbq

I agree with the other commenters, you have a beautiful deck, use it as it is. Also, painting it now would be the beginning of a nightmare in the future.

I agree with the others. The decking, seems to go well with the roof, and the house. I wouldnt do a thing to it, unless it needs cleaning. Some nice colorful furniture. I also like the color of the house with the roof and the decking, so I would rethink, painting it white.

I'm not sure if your deck is stained or painted but here are 2 colours that are nice with a white house. If stained, you can use a semi-transparent or semi-solid stain. Perhaps it would be a good idea to paint your house first and then decide on the best colour for the deck.
