Window treatment and counter stools help needed
Hi all! We just bought a new house and are looking at window treatment options. We are considering bamboo Roman shades or blinds with linen curtains to go over these windows in the dining room. This side of the house catches the southwestern sun (a little more west than south) with nothing blocking it from directly entering the windows. There will be a house there in the next couple of years though, and that should block some of it a little. We do however want to let in as much natural light as possible throughout the day.
Also, we are looking for counter stool ideas as well. The ones in the pic are from staging.
I’m including pics of the inside of the dining area, kitchen, and living room since it’s one big open space and also the front view of the house from the road. The window all the way to the right will have blinds since it is my daughter’s bedroom, so keep that in mind.
So my questions are…
- bamboo Roman shades or blinds for dining room windows?
2)would you hang the shades/blinds from point A or point B? - what color bamboo Roman shades/blinds should I go with?
- what color and design for curtain rods? I’m thinking black (ceiling fan is black, my kitchen table is black and brown)
- what kind of counter stools should I go with? We want something with a back.

Comments (47)Oh goodness another dilemma to look forward to! :>) Honestly the only one I like is the wood stool with the rush top. Pretty, classic, unobtrusive, can push it all the way in, and don't have to worry about the seat backs lining up, if that's something that would bother you. Love the idea of a swivel. Less wear and tear on the floors and without a back there's even more of a chance people won't have to move the stool much to get on. But does the color match your island? I also like that the rung for your feet goes all the way around so you have some options of how you sit and where you put your feet rather than on the little bird perch on some of the others. That would be a no go for me. Normally I assume I want a back, but when I think about it, I typically don't sit back anyway. As long as I can lean on the counter when socializing and can reach the rung or floor comfortably I'm usually good. I think most of the others are too modern and/or look like beauty parlor chairs, especially with arms. The wicker tulips very modern or islandy and they do not look comfortable, especially if you don't have the right size butt! The red fabric one someone posted looks nice, but does the base with tapered out legs take up more room? I think you should just wait until you get your backsplash and window treatments up. Even though you know what they are they can still change the look of the space, but overall I think most of the options you've been pulling are too modern. Comments (9)2littlefishies- we will have 10' ceilings. I loved the idea of taller ceilings when we started building our house, but now I'm frustrated all the time trying to work with them. Cabinets were hard to figure out and now curtains are really hard because of these transoms. Michelle- I don't really know all the details. The window was ordered from jenn-weld. They will be tall and skinny, but because the transoms divide it up I think it will be okay. Our original plan was a 48" window divided into 2 panels. I didn't want that because I didn't want the window stile to block my view. Im not sure, but I think it may have been a custom window. I hope that helps a little. I'll have to look into roller shades. I don't think we'll have privacy issues, but we are building in a subdivision where there will be other people around. Comments (5)Hi Michelle, Welcome to the Forum and out of lurkerdom, and congratulations on the new house. The colors of your surfaces and their ability to reflect light become very important when there isn't a lot of light. Light horizontal surfaces with darker cabinets generally look lighter than dark horizontals with light cabinets. I'm not getting which color you meant in the cabinet picture. Is it the middle one between the white looking one and the maple looking one? Medium brown with dark cracks? If so this is a nice medium light with just that touch of dark to bring up the color. To help make things look lighter, while having the color depth you want, I'd suggest one of the Crystallines. The Crystalline Pearl would be a great choice. It's not as dramatic as the Shell or Dune, but those are medium browns as are your cabinets, and you probably want more contrast. On the other hand, since your husband likes dark, and so do you, you could choose something dark that you both love and make up for it with really good, energy efficient lighting. Comments (12)thank you, what did you mean by "I would not take up the charge of the sink"? Do you mean you wouldn't bother replacing? Regarding the flooring....the rest of the house has the old school 3/4" oak flooring so if I change the flooring to hardwood in the kitchen and entryway, I would have to change out all the hardwood in the living room and kitchen. This was my thought process anyway. I did check out the cost and for the flooring I like, it would be a lot of $. To answer your question, the sq footage of the combined entry way and kitchen which is currently tiled, is about 170 sq ft. what did you mean about backsplash? I was thinking black granite counter top and then a simple backsplash and yes I def want a coordinated look. warm, inviting and not choppy and misfitting. thanks again...See More

last yearPretty house! Without knowing your furniture and colors, I'd say woven shades or neutral solar shades plus linen drapery would go with a lot of things. I'd do a curtain rod at the ceiling and wall-to-wall. That way, your drapery can be open without covering the windows. Kind of like this.

last yearThank y’all so much! We have these off-white linen couches and this rug. This is my current living room. We’re keeping the couches and rocker for now, however we are open to making changes if we can’t tie everything together somehow.
The kitchen island is SW Sea Serpent, which is a deep blue, however I’m going to eventually paint it either urbane bronze or black fox to make it a little warmer. Here’s a picture of my kitchen table. Thinking of staining the beams in the new house the same color as my table to make them blend more.
