Comments (3)Your "so many projects" problem as well as your recent post about these rock walls makes me see some merit in your husband's plan. You have a real problem with weeds in those rock walls that you need to beat, so it would pay off to take a long view. The long view of your plan says that if you leave this dirt exposed, no matter what you plant, you will have a weed-infested mess by the end of the summer. I would actually think it quite a good plan to do the fabric and rocks thing for now, for a year or two, until you have the weed problem in this whole area more under control, possibly grass removed at the base of the rock wall. You could leave a little space open to try some of the plants you have in mind. Try your delosperma in a sunny area and see how it spreads and grows before you commit a whole area to it. Plant and nurture some other ground covers as well in a sunny, open bed somewhere. As you get the whole property under control, you can gradually remove the rocks and fabric here and plant up a little more area. You can even plant in holes in the fabric, either a bit of ground cover here or a smoke bush there, and remove the rocks and fabric as they grow in. By the way, this looks like a perfect place for some nice carpeting junipers - "Mother Lode" for example, with some of the blue ones. Comments (9)Thanks for the comments. This dieback didn't occur during winter, it occurred during last summer after the gardener planted them. During the winter, I did get a little bit of winter leaf burn, but I trimmed off the leaves, and that damage was a lot less. OK, I will try pruning the dead stems down a little further. I have no other space to put them, actually, not sure what I would do with them if I took them out. If I put the 2 damaged ones right next to eachother I could perhaps get 1 full looking holly but that probably isn't good for the plants. That is a downspout nearby, yes. It empties into the pond, so fortunately doesn't flood the sky pencils. As for the A/C unit, it's been a while since we had it on but I think the hot air coming out of the unit mostly goes upward. That is a good point, though I didn't think about air coming out of the compressor potentially affecting these shrubs. I will evaluate this summer. (Last year my worries were all about the shrubs shortening the life of our A/C unit.... my thoughts were the other way around). Sounds like I need to be patient and there may be some hope for these hollies.... may be it will bother me less once I figure out what to plant in front of them...See MoreHolly selection and design ideas
Comments (14)I'm not sure you had mentioned the exposure -- full sun? Hot and dry? Part shade? Wet? well-draining? It's next to impossible to make recommendations until we know that. If very sunny and hot, well-draining, maybe consider Pittosporum or India Hawthorn instead of the larger hollies? Hellerei's need part shade and really good drainage. Ilex cornuta Carissa holly is a bit spikey, but loves the heat. Maybe consider some smaller forms of Ternstroemia. If part shade and well draining, there are some wonderful compact miniature Kalmias, like 'Minuet'. Silversword Azalea has a nice variegation. Osmanthus heterophyllus rotundifolius might be hard to find, but is a nice, friendly, slower-growing mounding plant with very few pests. Crimson Pygmy Barberry are deciduous, right? Maybe consider an evergreen dwarf Loropetalum instead? Also, the spreading habit of Fall blooming Camellia sasanqua 'Bonanza' might be nice to work in, maybe by the garage. Can be clipped to take the shape it needs. I guess by 'Florida shrubs' you mean Weigela? Also deciduous. In Raleigh there should be a million evergreens to choose from for year-round appeal. Unless they want blooms. Anyway, just some different plants to consider....See MoreNeed help identifying and fixing landscape bushes
