Advice after landscapers mangled rose bush
Comments (5)It was a beautiful rose before and it can be again :-) And the above is a very reasonable suggestion, although that approach should have been done several months ago. Few roses can go through life looking good without frequent pruning attention......as in annually every late winter or early spring at a minimum. Apparently this shrub has not received any recently, as indicated by that mass of old stems and canes exposed by the landscapers. What you can do now is to carefully prune out at the base of the plant any canes that are obviously dead and any thin stems emerging from lower canes that are leafless or smaller in diameter than a pencil. You want to open up or clear out that center congested area to improve air circulation and encourage new growth. Other than trimming back wayward or long arching canes, which you can do any time, serious hard pruning should be left until late winter (late February or March, typically). Ideally, you want to reduce that mass of canes arising from the ground to just a few of the largest and healthiest (5-7 or so) and cut back the top growth by at least 1/3, cutting back to an outward pointing bud. Fertilize at that time with a rose fertilizer that contains alfalfa meal (or just use alfalfa meal), as that will encourage new basal canes to appear. Continue this regime on an annual basis for a vibrant, healthy rose that does not outgrow its space....See MoreI need to replace dead bushes with something else. Oso Easy Roses?
Comments (15)I am not sure if you can get the Shield Rose where you live. This one has survived everything that is thrown at it. I never got around to covering it up for the winter. due to going for therapy on a pulled muscle in my arm and upper thigh. I was afraid it had gone but like wow they all survived but one. Here is one of my Shield or there is the gorgeous Chinook Sunrise. Was having issues but you should see it this year and I never got to cover it up as well. This shield rose is awesome!!! Hah one lady said I should cut it back as I wouldn't get any roses on it. Well it made a liar out of her as it did indeed get roses on it all kinds of beautiful red ones. Even had a bout with the sawfly larvae which I ended up taking out my stool and a measuring cup of hot water and dish detergent and picking them off it by hand. Then when finished I threw the water over our wooden fence with them in it. :) I live north of Toronto in Ontario, Canada. Have yet to see the flowers on the chinook as they were all finished with for the season when I bought it from our nearby garden centre. But have seen pictures of them online. Have yet to see any buds on the shield or the chinook....See MoreHolly selection and design ideas
Comments (14)I'm not sure you had mentioned the exposure -- full sun? Hot and dry? Part shade? Wet? well-draining? It's next to impossible to make recommendations until we know that. If very sunny and hot, well-draining, maybe consider Pittosporum or India Hawthorn instead of the larger hollies? Hellerei's need part shade and really good drainage. Ilex cornuta Carissa holly is a bit spikey, but loves the heat. Maybe consider some smaller forms of Ternstroemia. If part shade and well draining, there are some wonderful compact miniature Kalmias, like 'Minuet'. Silversword Azalea has a nice variegation. Osmanthus heterophyllus rotundifolius might be hard to find, but is a nice, friendly, slower-growing mounding plant with very few pests. Crimson Pygmy Barberry are deciduous, right? Maybe consider an evergreen dwarf Loropetalum instead? Also, the spreading habit of Fall blooming Camellia sasanqua 'Bonanza' might be nice to work in, maybe by the garage. Can be clipped to take the shape it needs. I guess by 'Florida shrubs' you mean Weigela? Also deciduous. In Raleigh there should be a million evergreens to choose from for year-round appeal. Unless they want blooms. Anyway, just some different plants to consider....See MoreNeed help identifying and fixing landscape bushes
