Suggestions Needed - How to Handle Gap Behind Stove
Comments (7)Sounds like it's a slide in range, based on the fact it's designed to overlap the counters. Slide in ranges are designed to be installed with a strip of countertop behind them. This counter is not present when a slide in is retrofitted in the spot of a freestanding range, or the installation guidelines of the range were not taken into account in the construction of the kitchen, LOL. As mentioned above, the manufacturers have filler strips to deal with this issue, but there are also more aesthetically pleasing options available. For example, GE has a backguard for slide ins (linked) that's kind of like the one on a freestanding range but is much more low profile. Here is a link that might be useful: GE slide in backguard This post was edited by hvtech42 on Fri, Nov 28, 14 at 22:58...See Morewasher and dryer with stove in between in kitchen - ideas?
Comments (13)Hi All, Well, I've already purchased standard sized washer & dryer, so buying new under counter is out and the ceiling is too low to put a stacked unit. I love the idea of covering just the eyes of the washer & dryer with something. I have seen an oeulle de boeuf (round window) that had a wire circle with stretched fabric over it that might work - something to clip or hang inside the circles of the w&d eyes that would be easy to take off to use the appliances. I think a taught something over wire that hangs inside the circles wouldn't be too flammable, and certainly not as flammable as a curtain. Plain white contact paper wouldn't last long on the dryer. Except in winter I usually cook outside anyway - have a covered porch right outside the kitchen. Am going to a craft show this weekend and will look around for ideas. Paintings or photos of sleeping sheep's eyes? As far as counter space goes, am going to put the w&d next to each other and place a very large butcher block over both. That would match the wood counters. (Or rather the counters that are some day going to be wood..ha ha...these things always take way more time than anticipated. Normally I chop on a separate cutting board at the kitchen table since the table is the right height for me, so the height of the w&d won't bother me. Thanks everyone for your comments. I'll post photos when the kitchen is put together. Cheers, Northface...See MoreGap on the side of new granite counter and cabinet!
Comments (23)Oh, now I see. I assumed your cabinets were new. Sorry. Now it all makes sense. It is normal for cabinetmakers to use scrap materials--perhaps even patched together--to build the "blind" surfaces (i.e. the parts that nobody will see once the cabinet is installed). So it's nobody's fault, really. But it's still a tough situation. The only way I can see of making it look as if it were originally built the way you want it is to temporarily remove your oven cabinet, take it to a shop, and perform "surgery" and refinishing on it to add a true finished side. But that would be fairly expensive.. If you don't insist on perfection, you could hire a finishing specialist (or someone who restores furniture) to cut out the utility grade material, patch in some cabinet grade material, carefully putty it over, sand it, and spray it on site. If your hire is skillful enough, you'll only see that it's been "reverse-engineered" if you look at it up close, and she or he might be able to build out the side so as to close up that ugly gap in the process. Just some ideas. Good luck!...See MoreHas anyone ever left a gap between kitchen cabinets to use for storage
Comments (24)Both Rev-a-shelf and Slide Out Shelves offer pullout fillers that will fit a 4" gap, so it doesn't have to be an open cubby if you don't want it to be. But do measure carefully to be sure that the gap really will be 4", which I think will make the actual available storage more like 3" (double check with the designer), and that the stepstool will also fit height-wise with the mechanism in place. I have seen open cubbies that are nicely finished on some kitchen reveals here, also, used for towels, sheet pans, even paper towel holders - the first and last with pullout hangers for them....See Morebarndwellers
