Why didn't they just put the tp holder on the vanity? Who wants to reach way ahead for tp anyways? Ok, so first of all when you say apartment is this a rental or do you own it? If you own it, I would get rid of the towel bar and tp holder. The tile looks like a standard white and if you have to break a few tiles to get rid of them you should be able to replace them pretty easily. Then you can put tp holder on the vanity. Then you could put a towel rack or hooks (my preference) on the drywall above the tile. Above that you could put a shallow depth medicine cab or other shelving unit. Again, if you own it you could sink the cab in between the studs by cutting out the drywall. If it's a rental, you are kind of stuck with whats there. I would use the towel bar for big towels and just ignore the ceramic tp holder and put another one on the vanity. I'd look for shallow depth shelves or cabs to go above the tile behind the door. You can get a neat little thing at places like HD that slide onto the door hinge that will stop the door before it hits the shelves. I would just do open shelves and then have rows of nice baskets to put your ugly stuff in - just mount the shelves high enough that you aren't going to be able to look into the baskets. If you use the ceramic towel rack, then you could get rid of the over the door towel hooks and buy an over the door canvas shoe holder and use that to store things like hairbrushes, razors, shaving cream etc. The one we have is white so it would fit right in with your colour scheme (which I really like BTW). Do you have any room behind the door? or is the door frame almost flush with that wall? Our bathroom is almost identical to yours but we have about 10 inches behind the door. We had a cabinet built for that area and it is amazing how much it holds. Like you we are stuck with the trash between either the vanity and toilet or the tub and toilet. Hope this helps.

I like the rectangle island much better too. It may be a bit more expensive than keeping the current footprint, but if you're going to be spending anything you may as well get something really functional. You can see about reusing things like cabinet doors, drawer fronts and end panels even if you need some new base cabinet boxes. I also like where GreenD shows the fridge (near the dining area). As mentioned above, you can use a laptop anywhere so I'd also skip the desk (they tend to be clutter magnets) and just make sure you have some outlets in your island. Regarding the floor: if you like the current tile but can't find an exact match to fill in any new spaces, you could consider doing a nicely coordinating pattern just in the space between your island and the permimeter cabinets. (And around the far side of the island if necessary but it doesn't look like you would need any new tile and that side.) I know tiles can get expensive even for a small area, but if you shop around and get creative you create something you like for a great price. I'm with the stones-and ground cover crowd. I'd use big squares of bluestone or a concrete paver you like, plant vinca minor (the dark green small-leaved periwinkle), put in tons of daffodil bulbs to come up through it in the spring and be gone by the time you have to do maintenance, and mulch heavily so you can be patient for the two or three seasons it takes for the periwinkle to make a dense, thick mat. Absolutely worth the wait. And then, because the area doesn't go anywhere, I'd put an exterior grade full length mirror on the back skinny wall, surround it with natural trellising, plant a vine to cover it eventually (not ivy - a huge headache to control), and set a big birdbath just in front of the mirror. The mirror solves the dead-end problem and throws the light around a bit, the vine and trellis furnish and mask the wall, the birdbath gives you a focal point, the vinca is deep and soft, and the big stepping stones give the space some scale and a comfortable surface to walk down and to support the tasks of maintenance. A large-scale edited scheme like this would give your skinny little alleyway some real presence. It's a perfect "go big or go home" situation!

You would loose some heating efficiency, but you might be able to change to an insulated stovepipe (or at least part of the pipe) and fill in part of the area behind it and hang the tv just to the left of the stove. Or leave it as is and look into projection tv and hang the screen above the left side of that opening and pull it down when you want to view. Another idea would be to turn the sofa toward the sliding doors and redo that closet to have a built in TV
