having trouble deciding color for new lap hardie siding that we will install to replace old cedar siding (rot). We have recently switched out our old cedar roof to a new weathered wood color shingle roof. The new weathered wood roof is brown-gray but more brown under natural light. I believe our home style can be considered "modern". We are having trouble deciding on new siding color (will paint it after we install new hardie). I am just planning on doing all lap, instead of having some regions with panel style, because I'm not sure there are many big areas where panel style would look nice -- unless yall disagree. The other parts of the house can be seen here. Most of the houses in the neighborhood have siding color that are earthtones. But we would prefer something in the blue/gray range such as prussian cadet or indigo cloth. BUT really need help with figuring this out. There's also option for second level siding and chimney to be painted a different color as well. Our window trim and gutters will be all white. We also have front door that is currently brown (open to repaint in the near future). Garage door is same color as siding currently (but will definitely replace into something more modern style as well). Any suggestions for garage door style and color also much appreciated. I believe the floor of front deck AND the back porch should be painted a different color as the siding, but was told it should be darker than the siding?? Any recommendation would be much appreciated!! THANKS

@Janelle rVarathane Kona might be a good option it still has some red undertones so it would be a warmer brown. Ebony would defiantly make it darker and be a bit more matchy/matchy with the table. Or you can throw caution to the wind and do a Weathered Gray- this one you would have to strip the cabinets to bare wood in order for it not to look weird. Rustoleum has Dark Walnut that might be pretty as well and then again throwing caution to the wind there is a color called SunBleached which would be very similar to your flooring. Minwax has a lot of mixable colors as well. The downfall to mixable is there is always room for error- meaning if you run out, even if they use the same formula there is a chance that it could be different one can to another. what i would suggest is to figure out what wood species the cabinets are ( based off of the pictures I would guess Alder or Hickory, they seem to have a lot of variations in the tone) and test out the colors in your kitchen. IMO I would go darker- I think the darker colors like the Kona or maybe even an Espresso would really make the floor and the counter top POP! And if you decide to paint them Prep work is key! From experience taking the extra time to prep the cabinets and make sure they are super clean before painting is the difference between wow and oh no! Good luck! We just completed a project with a lot of ipe but we used Cypress for the bulk of the structure including site built outdoor kitchen cabinets, benches, operable shutters and slatting. We built the boat house in the same design style with cypress and ipe material. This one has ipe skirting with custom ipe barn doors and an ipe deck above the underside storage.

Heck no. Old houses often have a different species in every room depending on what was available and cheap that day. Our house is half white oak and half birdseye maple. I don't think anyone ever notices. If you are weaving old and new floor together, then yes you do what to blend them. If they are in different rooms than just make a threshold and let them be different. Way more interesting than samey-samey. My woodshop floor is randomly assorted "mixed domestic hardwoods"-- 17 species I've counted so far. Looks great and people always comment favorably on it. That's another extreme-- with the added benefit that it only cost $1/sf.
