Establishing perennials beyond the reach of hoses
Comments (24)If it were easy, and things would grow just because you plopped them down on the ground, what fun would that be ? We grow to cherish the plants we worked hard to establish, right ? :) Plus, just think of all the weeds that would also flourish right over the tops of the desired plants ? Hee, no, give me semi-arid for the maintainability aspect. I know that eastern woodland climates are much much more prone to weeds. We got between 1.5 and 2 inches of rain yesterday...I'm not carrying water to the fencerow naturalization project for at least a week. And everything is so happy. Too bad I wasn't constitutionally able to plant the allium stellatum, vernonia letermani, or habranthus tubispathus...I just couldn't bear to move pots of flowering plants into the row away from the house, till they finished flowering. In about a week, I'll be ready to plant the remainder...just as the soil gets dry enough to require buckets of water again (if no more rain). Oh, and I have seedlings of coreopsis lanceolata (yes that weed), and engelmannia peristenia to plugs in...they're growing by pairs in plastic Dixie cups. I drilled a hole through the stack of cups, and they made perfect 2-3 inch pots to grow the seedlings up to potential rabbit snacks (yes, even by the house, they've nibbled and not liked). They go sometime next month...I want to get them a little bigger before they face the wild world w/o me looking at them 2-3 times a day....See MoreBedroom: Reach-in Closet height
Comments (13)I will tell you that I would pay some extra money for a specialty door if it made my home that much easier and enjoyable to live in. That's what money's for. But if the cost of special doors is way too much, you could perhaps go with two-part doors, so the bottom is a standard size and the top is special-made (the door itself could be a simple 2x4 frame for attaching the hinges, and with a piece of flat plywood (with iron-on edgebanding) as the top surface; and paint it the same color as the wall--easier to make it look like it's wall, then). You could have your contractor make it to fit, and it really shouldn't be that expensive. If you did this, don't put a crossbar above the lower door, though, since it will limit your access; and attach the faux "top of the doorframe" molding to the bottom of the upper door. There might be a visible gap around that panel, which you could frame in molding (on both doors) for the "blind transom" look. If you want to truly camouflage, you could add that same molding above every window (as in that house above a/ the effect in every room) Here is a link that might be useful: These people made the upper section of the closet be a set of cubbies!...See More(rant) Drywallers damaged LED lighting
Comments (24)"This is a great example though, of why Everything should be in writing. " Really great idea in theory. In practice, it's not generally truly feasible to do so. There have been screw-ups on our remodel that are so truly obvious that a "reasonable person" would/wouldn't do that. And...it isn't a language barrier issue here as everyone working on our kitchen has English as their first (and probably only) language. Heck, even when we HAVE tried to save them from themselves, we haven't been fully successful - take moving our fridge at the start of the project. We asked for (and in most areas, they did) hardboard to be put down everywhere before moving it to keep our hardwood floors from being scratched (we were paying for the hardboard). They put in in all but about 5 ft...part of which was where they were moving the fridge. We asked them again before the actually moved the fridge if they were going to put down something in that 5 ft area to protect the floor. And they said "yes", so I left for work with the reassurance that they were doing what they were supposed to. What did they do? They didn't put anything down...and they scratched the floor. Their response when I asked them WTH they were thinking??? "Well, you're going to be getting that part of the floor refinished anyway." Sure, we are...but that's really not the point. Anyway, with all of that, it's to say that you can try to go over everything, you can get things in writing to the best of your ability, you can try to ensure that there's not communication error...and in the end, short of standing right there in the kitchen the entire time of the renovation, there can still be screw ups....See Moredrywall box as a junction box
