What Have You Seen in the Garden This Week?
Comments (15)BG, I have never seen VFs in these numbers before, and I've been doing this for around 12 years now. One or two here and there and that's all. They are having a field day or days I should say, nectaring, mating, and laying eggs. They are not shy at all. I can stand right next to them as they nectar and they act like I'm not even there! LOL! This has been a wonderful opportunity to observe their behavior, etc. Color patterns appear to vary as well, from a butterscotch yellow to fairly bright orange. Some I can tell they are in the longwing family and not frit family, but others are shorter, rounder forewings. Much variation in size as well. I have a few blooming things right now - Dallas Red Lantana, Coreopsis 'Jethro Tull', Verbena bonariensis, Dianthus, Spanish Lavender, white clover, but that's about it. I have so much to do - plant Zinnia, Tithonia, and other seeds I direct sow. Pot up my Oscar Milkweeds and Japanese MGs. Sandy, my Purple Milkweeds are up and doing well. Slow growing, but they survived winter and probably my horrid gardening techniques Don't think A. sullivanti made it, tho. I have A. speciosa coming up everywhere and it is about to bloom, too. It's supposed to have a very pretty bloom so I can't wait. I got my plants from Almost Eden this week, too, Lavendar Porterweed, Hamelia patens, and Miami Sunrise Tecoma. Can't wait to get these planted out as well. Am very anxious to see the blooms on the Tecoma. Supposed to be orange fading to yellow, a relatively new cultivar. Christie, re: Spicebush Swallowtails. Sometimes a banner year is followed by a sparse year. Don't worry, they'll be along....... Have you planted another splendid Zinnia patch? MissSherry - of course, there are many of your butterflies I'd love to see. I know it's very unlikely I'll ever see a Palamedes Swallowtail. I have seen a couple of RSPs, but doubt I'll ever see many and they are sooooooo gorgeous! Same for Viceroys. They just are not a butterfly found in urban areas here. Occasional strays only and I cherish these sightings. I am missing Swallowtails of any kind this year. Haven't seen one at all. Too bad, I have all these big, blowsy, clumps of Fennel just waiting to whet their appetites. Maybe a bit later on....... Susan...See MoreHave you guys seen a forecast today?
Comments (3)I'm happy your forecast looks so good. Our forecast shows a much lower chance of rain for most days and some evenings---20 to 30%, but we're not hurting for rain nearly as much as you are so we're okay if none of that rain falls here this week. Our forecasts show the same major cool-down by the end of the week. Our temperatures are still overachieving--yesterday we were 5 degrees higher than forecast, but even if those higher-than-forecast temperatures keep occurring, the cool-down still will make us significantly cooler than we have been in a long time, other than on rainy days. I hope you get to keep that bounce in your step all week long. I think it is a terrible shame that the June rainfall let you down. Once you get the pond bottom fixed so it holds all the water it is meant to hold, maybe you'll have insurance, in the form of water, to ensure that never happens again. Even with insurance, these last couple of years have been awful for the farmers in many areas. I don't know how much longer they can keep hanging on. The ranchers are worse off because I don't think you can insure your hay pastures the way you can insure planted row crops. When I look at how few cows there are in the fields around us these last two summers compared to what we had even as recently as 5 to 10 years ago, the decrease is herd size is just huge. Dawn...See Moreat do you have planned for the week-end?
Comments (22)I've been trying to get my friend's income tax return returned to her for signing, then to drop off at the tax office, to save postage, but rearrangements regarding her daughter's arrival from the west coast interfered ... and I'd done it wrongly, so had to do it over today. I have two to do for another friend ... and my own to do, as well ... so I'll be busy. I think that my last year's return isn't in the place that it's supposed to be ... so expect to need to go digging for it. I arranged affairs to pay about 9% last year, but suspect that it'll be some higher, this year. Wish me good skill in my calculations, folks, please! Better than for my friend: I'd neglected to add senior's low-income supplement, which caused slight reduction in some credits, but isn't taxed itself. ole joyful...See MoreTemperature forecast for next few weeks
Comments (2)Thanks, Lee! I would love cooler than average weather for as long as it wants to stay around, as long as it doesn't eventually interfere in the flavoring up of watermelons in July and August. I planted about 4 times as many cool-season crops as usual because it seemed, back when I was sowing seed indoors, like it was going to be a good year for cool-season plants (only a gut feeling or intution, I had no science backing me up in January when I sowed brassica seeds). The longer the cool-season plants stay cool, they better they'll produce. As for tomatoes, you know that I am a tomato freak and my plants are in the ground. SunGold produced 2 ripe tomatoes last week and 4 more today. Cherokee Purple and Early Girl are not far behind. I planted on time (well, at my usual time, which is early for anyone further north) and just covered up on the cold nights....and we weren't cold here as often as y'all were up there. Today I'm planting peppers and zinnias, and they'll enjoy the warm days and shiver through any late cold nights we get. This year's recurring cool nights are reminding me of 2002 and also of 1997. We still lived in Texas in 1997, though, but mesonet data shows that the cooler nights here in Love County were similar to what I had in Texas that year). Neither year seems as rainy as those two analog years yet, but the recurring cool nights feel very similar in the most wonderful sort of way. I might not especially love cool nights in April but I appreciate them a lot more in May or even into June if they last that long....See MoreMaryl (Okla. Zone 7a)
