Comments (28)I have known and loved these flowers since childhood. My grandmother and my mother had them in their gardens, and I grow them successfully every year. This plant is very delicate and should not be sowed inside, nor started in small containers and transplanted, if you do that they need a month to two to establish. It does not like to be transplanted, and will not grow well in a planter, unless it is really deep. Start them from seed, and sow directly in the garden, in April. They love full sun and lots of water, daily, in the evening. Mulch to keep moist, they melt and die if soil gets dry several days in a row. If you don't have a full sun area, don't even try. Mine self seed and I do not re-seed at all. Actually I have to clean-up my yard as they grow everywhere, and I pluck them out. A sandy mix of soil will be the best for them. I figured my grandmother had the best growing ones, and her garden was all sand, but she fertilized them with mushroom manure. Mix them in your beds with other flowers, in the borders, to mask their "ugliness" during the day. Water them every day, and each fall keep some seeds just in case. Fertilize with slow release pellets once a month, they will grow huge. They are wonderful, and absolutely beautiful in the evening....See MoreThe Sweetest Scents...
Comments (32)Christin, The phloz I have is 'Phlox divericata', wild Blue Phlox. Here is what my North American Wildlife book says about it: BLUE PHLOX Phlox divericata SIZE: 6 to 12 in. tall; flower, 3/4 to 1 1/2 in. across WHAT TO LOOK FOR: Flowers light blue (light blue violet) with 5 petals, often notched, at end of a slender tube, in clusters atop a sticky stem; Leaves in pairs, lance shaped. (shiny) HABITAT: Rich woods, clearings, fields, bluffs IN BLOOM: Apr.-June (I added what is in parenthesis) What it doesn't say is how deliciously fragrant this little flower is. It fill the air with its sweet fragrance. Everyone who visits asks, "What is that sweet perfumed flower I smell?" They are always surprised to discover it is that little plant on the ground. Even more fragrant than summer garden phlox. - It likes full sun or partial sun, btw. It has survived many of our severe droughts too. It is a ground cover, so it spreads, but I let it go where it wants to go as it fills in the bare spots between my spring bulbs and does not crowd out its neighbors. I can send you a few starts of it with roots. I started out with only two little plants that I dug up along the Illinois river in Northeast Oklahoma. It was growing on a cliff overlooking the river. I was white-water rafting at the time. I parked my canoe on a sandy gravel bar and climbed that rocky cliff, bagged two sprigs, and then dove down into the river with my prize in hand and swam back to my canoe, continuing on my 21 mile trip. Yahoo! :). That was such a blast! Anyway, it is just a wonderful little spring flowering phlox. I have taken a start of it with me every time I move. (I'm not moving again. Got too much junk and too many plants and rocks that I would NOT leave behind.) I am sure you would love it. ~Annie...See MoreHeavenly experience!!
Comments (1)Pharaoh, that's lovely..When flowers wake u in the middle of the night, that is heavenly..(S) Several yrs ago, I bought a packet of 4 o'clocks at Jewel for .10. Got home and sprinkled the packet on the side of my house..I really didn't think they'd grow, but for ten cents, it didn't matter much..This was about 8-10 yrs back..Wouldn't u know it, these plants grew a little the first summer. By year two, there were at least 20 plants w/flowers..Like I said, they're growing on the side of my house..At night, when we're sitting in the LR, the scent permeates into our home..It smells fantastic. I also have a Murray growing in a container in the back yard..It's so fragrent. There were literally hundreds of flowers growing on it..when I'm in the kitchen the smell from these flowers scent up the kitchen..so right now my house smells like a nursery..LOL..I'll enclose of pic of my Murraya so you can get an idea of the flowers..Toni Here is a link that might be useful: RE: Heavenly experience!!...See MoreEvening-Scented Stock: A Diva in Disguise!
Comments (6)They do smell wonderful, don't they? I love your scent description. There seems to be some confusion over this species. There are two species that people lump together under the name evening scented stock. I ordered some evening stock seeds last year and depending on the source got Matthiola longipetala which smelled okay but not anywhere close to the glorious scent of Matthiola bicornis. I believe I received M. bicornis seeds from Thompson & Morgan. The other seeds I ordered off various vendors on Amazon (and got the okay smelling M. longipetala species). Your post has reminded me that I need to sow some M. bicornis seeds to hopefully get some fall blooms. Thank you! :) -Robert...See MoreDiane Brakefield
