Need help ID'ing a fern and 2 tree or shrub flowers

These 3 photos were all taken by a friend in SW, lower, MI on May 21, 2022 in a wooded area or on its margins.

I think the fern might be a Marginal Wood Fern, Dryopteris marginalis or something in that family or genus.

The trumpet shaped flowers I couldn't id by an image search using a description, at first I thought maybe some type of honeysuckle but most seem to have 5 petals and are not shaped like this.

Could the 3rd photo be Cornus florida, flowering dogwood? TIA!

The second one is an Eleagnus, and, given Sod's Law, probably the invasive E umbellata.

Yes to Eleagnus umbellata. It's an evil invasive. Yes to Cornus/Benthamidia florida. Only Cornus florida and 1 similar Asian species have been moved to Benthamidia. It's obvious that the floral structure of C./B. florida is different from the other Cornus species with clusters of smaller flowers. All those Cornus species are now moved to Swida. Using the synonym Cornus is acceptable, but remembering the reasons for the split makes the entire group easier to understand. The ground covering Cornus canadensis is now Chamaepericlymenum canadensis Lol. I don't think the fern is Dryopteris marginalis. Dryopteris marginalis has lobed pinnules and this fern has pinnules that are entire. You can compare your fern to Osmunda/Claytosmunda claytoniana, Interupted Fern? The photo was taken from above, so I can't view the vertical form, but Interrupted fern grows very upright. If Osmunda claytoniana doesn't fit, I'd recommend more photos showing

the side view, and a photo of the underside of the leaf.

flora-uk, thank you for the suggestion...the photos you've linked me to do look like the shrub in question! I just stumbled upon this house while driving so I can't say as the whether or not it had flowers but the hardiness and soil conditions would make it a likely candidate. I think a better title for my thread would be "help me find something that looks like this" as I don't really care too much about this specific shrub. I'm more or less trying to find something similar to what this looks like. If it is indeed an Amelanchier then I think its mature size is far too big for what I'm after!

Thank you so much esh_ga for the help in ID'ing those bushes. I'm assuming that the Ninebark isn't supposed to be so overgrown and weeping to the ground the way it is? A good pruning necessary to get it back under control? The same with the others I presume. After you've told me what I have, I have changed my mind about getting rid of them! :-)) I think I'll just prune them all real well and hope for the best. BTW, do you happen to have any suggestions on just how much pruning each can withstand? I will be searching for care instructions on google as well but I figured I should ask seeing as you know what they are... LOL P.S. Those are NOT Tree of Heaven... but in my mind they are more annoying. They are Black Walnut seedlings, you can actually see part of one we have growing up beside the house which I would just love to cut down but the landlord wants it to stay... along with the other 8 or so we have growing around here. They might be nice trees to some people but to me and my hubby they are a PITA! Once the seeds drop to the ground they sure make a mess to clean up before we can mow... once again the landlord likes to collect the nuts/seeds but he didn't do it last year which left us to clean up after these messy trees... grrr. Wow, thank you for all your suggestions. I'm thinking it must be a box or privet honeysuckle. My plan is to cut it down to about a foot (as someone indicated above). Over the years, as it grew, the owners just trimmed the side of the shrub so that it wouldn't block the path on the side of the house. So it just grew higher and higher and now has started leaning over the path. So now it's just an annoyance and gets beat up on by anyone walking down the path. Knowing what it is I can now get it healthy and healthy-looking again. Thank you again! Your efforts are much appreciated. flora uk: there are some red leaves on top that have fallen from a nearby japanese maple, but it's all just the honeysuckle in the photo.

Beth, I went through Don R. Fragrant list and looked at a couple, like Sweetness for example...but am not familiar enough with a lot on the list to zero in on particulars that may fit the bill. If you have the time and inclination, you could go through one by one, narrowing the field by eliminating obvious references to names like "blue" or "gold" etc. Chances are you might find it. :-)

Accurate fern ID requires looking at the entire blade (does it have more than one part, as in a Bracken fern); is it widest at the top or bottom or middle; is the stem hairy? what shape and place are the sori (seedlike things usually on the underside of the frond), and how does it grow, from a circle or on runners?

There's an app for wildflowers. I use New England Wildflowers, but they have one for each state or region of the country. It's useful because you can pull out your phone and look up most flowers. It doesn't do well with ferns.

Thanks everyone. I will definitely advise regarding Eleagnus umbellata. It was photographed at the campground belonging to several of our local church boys clubs.

I don't know just how extensive the growth is at this point in time. Hopefully we caught it early and maybe can eliminate it easily - fingers crossed.

If the person who took the pix of the fern wants to pursue more accurate ID I will see if I can get more detailed photos.
