Name That Plant!

Need Id for this Violet

I have Silver Gem Violets in my shade garden but their leaves are not similar to these that are popping up in the lawn. I was thinking of digging them up and planting them in the woods. They are really cute. I know how invasive they are but they could go everywhere in the woods and I wouldn't mind.

Another possibility for the white one is V. striata. The website I've linked to should ID your Violas easily if you want to verify them. A weed is just a plant that's growing where you don't want it to. I love my Violas but have no problem with rouging out the extras. I wait until after they bloom, though. Thank you, Lucky! I think it was a lizard. The neighborhood cats were nowhere to be found when I needed them. We don't have too many insects here, just a few ants. I found this link, but it does not have a photo of what I saw. I still do not know how to upload a photo. Maybe I will send it to my email then try to copy it here. http://www.californiaherps.com/lizards/lizardspics.html I live in a slightly rural suburb about 25 miles inland from a coastal region of northern California, there are a lot of hills that are unpopulated where the small wildlife comes from. Things like gophers, nothing too dramatic. The terrain is desert like, as in very little rain, but there are major bodies of water nearby, so not technically desert. Neighbors told me when we moved in a year ago there are lizards, this is the first time I have seen one, but I spend almost not time in the yard. Well, as long as they won't jump on me or crawl on the violets. I thought the thing was nervy to come close and not move. Kind of creepy looking for someone not used to seeing one. Joanne

Adorable! You can't know it's invasive if you don't know what it is. Could just be a thriving native.

Viola villosa? Native not invasive. this is a nice looking violet. I think it's the Common Blue violet, Viola sororia, that some people consider weedy, but it's also native and thus can't be invasive.

My response dissapeared. I accidentally found what I think I have--Prostrate violet, Walter's Violet, Viola Walteri. The silver Gem violet is a form of prostrate violet. They are native to our area. Now I am going to start digging/potting them up so they can live where I want them.

The regular more green V. walteri does grow in your area. Silver Gem was a more silver colored selection found in Bibb County AL. Mount Cuba Center grew it and introduced it. Viola walter has 4 ways of spreading. It has regular seeds, cleistogamous seeds, spreading rhizomes and runners.

I read about the cleistogamous seeds and that led to reading about ants. One way Violet seeds are dispersed is by ants. That explains why they are in patches in the lawn with usually a mature colony in the center. The ants also carry the bloodroot seeds all over my back shade garden, I have bloodroot popping up 10 or more feet away from the original colony. Nature is fascinating.
