Name That Plant!

Rare african violet ID

Hi, the nursery near by got this new batch of saint paulias or african violets, i got mine two days ago. Their not anything i seen before, flowers are tiny, green and there are many, maybe 60 or so.

leaves are just like normal saintpaulia/african violet leaves. i've included a picture here below. i would keen to know what my strange african violet is.

There must be a problem with the buds. There should be showy flowers at some point. Have you looked with magnification to see if there are mites or other pests?

Ok the box is on its way! DC#0308 2040 0001 3660 3442. once i opened the box i realized that it did not have an easy journey. half the leaves were broken/bruised or mush.the box looked like someone had played a little football with it. I sent along the ones that i thought could make it and put in some fresh leaves. It was still like Christmas going through the box!! These are always so much fun! Will a 27 watt desk light work for African Violets?

I have one 30W CFL in my desk lamp, and it was lighting 11 AVs, and they were all blooming. It was a mix of minis, semiminis and standards. I just thinned it down to 7 yesterday (moved the others to different locations). It gets a tiny bit of overspill from an 85W to the left (angle is wrong, and the reflector is pointing most of the light down into my terrarium), but really, that 30W is pretty much the light that they get. The lamp is about 8 or 9 inches above the leaves. I think I have the light on for 12 or 13 hrs. My lamp is your standard desk lamp with the angular adjustable arm. I wish it had a wider dome/reflector, but it got appropriated to light my AVs. It was originally supposed to actually be my desk lamp : )

Alwong, sometimes the bloom stalk needs to be manipulated to stand upright between leaves, instead of under. Go slow and be gentle. Also, a picture is worth 1000 words, maybe more. Is your plant growing in a nice flat rosette? If so, don't mess! You only need to pull off the ocassional outer row of leaves as they get old and grungy looking. If it's not in a flat rosette, if it's all over the place, chances are you have suckers and need to deal with those. As always, check out Rachel's site for illustrated instructions on what to do. Haxuan, HAHAHAHA! Welcome to the club. Wait until you start getting interested in the *other* Gesneriads; do you have Chirita tamiana? It's from northern Vietnam, and as easy to grow as an AV. All your spare money will go bye-bye along with your spare time. Still, it's a better hobby than gambling or football. You might have more luck posting this on the African Violet forum. You say it's a new variety, it looks like yours is still in the bud stage so maybe it just needs some time.

hi, thank you for advice,
There are no pests, all of the plants were the same
as the one i got. i try to post on the african violet forum.
but i give it sometime first to see if the buds will develop more.

I've never seen an AV with so many tiny buds. Even mini AV's don't produce that many. If you get an ID can you post back here? I'd love to see a pic when the buds open as well.

My guess is Saintpaulia Botanika. Because of the number of buds and bud size.

Carol do the buds not open fully on this variety? I just did a search and all the pics show them looking like the one you linked.

Hi, karyn1,
The link I sent you is of a plant winning a blue ribbon as a fully bloomed plant at its peak. Its flowers are fully open. It's an odd plant. People like it because its odd.

I don't care much for AV's but I do like that one, blooms and all. Do you know if The Violet Barn sells them?

I have one of these i bought years ago from Lowes. I’ve beebeen trytrying to find more inf about it for a long time. I love this violet because it is so unusual!

That is truly bizarre so I'm glad you pulled up this thread, HU*95, and I can't believe that you found one at a Lowe's! Does yours "bloom" as profusely as the one in OP's photo?
