What's Blooming in the Garden Today
Comments (17)Dear Eric, OOOhhh how lovely your garden Blooms!!! I live in Victoria on Vancouver Island and have just bought my first rose bush - Gruss An Aachen. I see you have one and your roses are truly spectacular. could you give me a few tips? Would you please recommend your favorite rose gardening book for good tips on growing them? Would half day or full day sun be best for this species? Do you add coffee grounds to your rose beds? I adore roses and I have shyed away from them for a long time because I've heard they can be hard to grow. I've only been gardening for the past 6 years although an avid gardener I am still a beginner. Any tips would be so very much appreciated! Thank you for posting your fabulous photos!!! Comments (31)Hi Diane, thanks for your comment. I don't think our climate is that similar as my is so hot for so long. However I think we may have similar noses as we seem to enjoy similar roses for scent. Yes I have alkaline sandy soil. Our bore water has a pH of 9!! I have to keep adding acid and trace elements to the soil to keep the garden green. I do have an Angel Face and it does smell good too but not as consistently as the above mentioned roses. I've just ordered a Young Lycidas today as well! Heard some good comments about its scent. I will keep you posted. Many of my roses are not scented in the first year. PAOK is one of them. It flowers a lot and I hope it will become fragrant next year. I smelled one at a rose show earlier this year and it did have a very strong perfume and a note which I enjoy. Beverly also took a year to produce perfume. Do you cut the Augusta Luise? I cut them when they are half open and keep them indoors. As they open in the vase overnight they become very strongly scented and the scent will last for about 3 days. I got this rose because of its perfume alone. I smelled a vase of these at a rose show and they smelled like strong pot pourri. Everyone was in awe of its fragrance. I knew I had to grow one....See MoreDavid Austin Fragrances
Comments (17)I always thought Mme. Isaac Pereire the strongest old rose scent, then Comte de Chambord, and then I added Yolande D'Aragon which matched Mme. I.P. This year, in his third year, William Shakespeare 2000 finally had a strong scent; and Sidonie is beating out Mme. I.P., with Duchesse de Rohan, which I don't remember being said to be that strong, equalling Sidonie. Mr. Lincoln is one of the few H.T.s that I think has a fairly strong smell, and it is the old damask scent, although my only (non Portland damask) damask, La Ville de Bruxelles, hasn't bloomed yet, so I can't compare her. I don't remember her having a strong damask scent at all. Others say my Enfant de France has a strong scent but not so to me. September Morn, a 1913 HT, from memory has a strong scent but hasn't bloomed yet this year. My sole Alba, Felicite Parmentier, is fragant but doesn't match the others....See MoreMadame Isaac Periere or Louise Odier?
Comments (17)Hi all, Thanks for all the comments Much appreciated! The reason why i didn't mention my location is because i wanted to hear from your experience whether its good or bad about those roses. Location is important, but I also think factors like the potting mix, the container size and the type of bare-rooted rose that you recieve are also important too. I've tried growing Evelyn and Jude four times, and noticed sometimes they were great performers but other times they were weak. Anyway, I've looked up both roses on Youtube posted by Jeffcat, and noticed that MIP has vicious thorns and the bush look gangling and lack the graceful habit, and i'm not sure if i would like the flower form. As for Louise Odier... the blooms are small and very similar to MofC and I already have Mayor of Casterbridge and is doing great in my garden. I've changed my mind and decided to give Madame Pierre Oger a try. Thanks!...See Morelibrarian_gardner_8b_pnw
