Cost to recover a sofa
Comments (1)It really depends where you are but with new cushions could be $1000. The person who does reupholstery for us says it's really not worth reupholstering newer furniture - it's not built to last, and it's cheaper to replace. You might look at Lazy Boy, Jennifer, etc and see if there's something you like for less....See MoreQuestion about recovering sofa

Comments (2)Call a local reupholstery shop and they will inspect the sofa. They should remove the bottom dust cover for a through inspection. Ask questions: Is it a hardwood frame with double dowel construction, 8-way coil spring seat or sinuous wire, is the frame padded over well? Is their any movement in the arms. Then compare the costs of re-upholstering to buying the same quality at retail, using the exact same fabric or leather....See MoreRecovering chairs seats -- need staple gun advice
Comments (19)kitch4me - You are right...a compressor & air gun would be optimal. The cost would have been a little more, but likely worth it. We have very limited storage space at our home, so didn't want to store a compressor. I am getting by pretty well with just this electric gun. After my projects are complete (and if I decide to continue upholstery for a long term hobby), I may decide to go with a compressor & air gun. loves2read makes a helpful suggestion about the size (not thickness) of your foam. I just looked at my upholstery book and it shows a picture of the layers. The top layer shows the wooden seat, then the foam below the seat (sticking out maybe 1 or 1-1/2"?), then below the foam is a layer of batting (sticking out about 2-1/2" beyond the wood), last layer is the fabric (sticking out about 3-1/2 - 4" beyond the wood). So, as loves2read recommends...the foam is going to be smaller than the fabric. You don't have to staple through the foam. P.S. Can anyone tell me how to resize my photos in Photobucket? I would like them to be about half as big (as what I posted above). I used to be able to do this, but Photobucket has made some changes....See MoreHU-602916737
