Found the solution for easy trimming of cats' fingernails

I saw a little video of someone holding their cat by the scruff of the neck using their mouth. The cat was perfectly still, as that's how their mother holds them.

I didn't want to hold Elliott in my mouth.....he sheds.........so I stuck a clothespin on his neck.

He was still! And I was able to trim all his front claws, even the dew claws.

Try it, and see if it works for you.

Sometimes I can do it with ease, other times he struggles, but I'll be doing it this way again, to see if indeed, it is the clip that is calming him.

OMG, what an unusual idea! Still, in some way it makes sense. I wonder if it would work on my VERY furry, super-shedding 10 y/o Tibetan Spaniel? She goes from being the sweetest, calmest little couch potato into a major little hellcat when trying to cut her nails! NOT using my mouth, though, but the clothespin idea. Hmmm!

When I had my cat, Rocket, it was a constant battle to trim his claws. Someone recommended a muzzle/blindfold from Four Flags https://www.fourflags.com a simple velcro muzzle and blindfold that had Rocket stand stock still. He could still breathe easily but could no longer bite and scratch me to pieces. They make them for dogs too. It took maybe two minutes to trim his claws using this.

Andrei Scherbak I understand your option. I think your creation is lovely. It is only unsuccessful if you don't keep taking care of it. My problem with terrariums is that they are created to look beautiful for the moment,,,,they are not long term beauties once they start growing and one plant outgrows the other! lol I do have about 12 terrariums going. Each one holds only one plant because they are miniatures and cannot survive in my dry house without the added humidity. I use no moss, no pretty landscaping to accent their beauty, these are strictly functional. I don't want to plant them all together in one container such as a very large aquarium. This way I can address one plant at a time. All of my containers are very large clear glass jars that I have turned upside down, put the little plant on the inside of the lid and screwed the glass part on. The containers will not win a blue ribbon but the little plants are growing fantastically and that is my goal. Keep experimenting!!!! You will figure out what works for you eventually! Your terrarium looks good for display,,,,,,mine is strictly functional and would not look good as a single display. Different strokes for different folks!!!! Good luck. Rosie

Garden Gloves or Dirty Fingernails?

I was struggling with this issue for a long time.Finally I think I got it.This is what I do for heavy many hours work I always wear gloves.First I put vaseline on my hands and a bit under nails.It will protect your nails and yes no dirt will get there the vasseline is like a barrier.then I put gloves the same kind used in medical or for food handling.If you get the ones with talcum powder they also will protect from dirt.Then I put my regular garden gloves on top of them.If I have to take my gloves off for any reason sometimes the first pair has to be replaced if your hands get moist you won't be able to reuse the same ones.So I just change them as needed.If I do light work I just stay with the first pair and change it as needed.It does work and my finger nails stay reasonably clean.If I do it well and re-apply vaseline each time the gloves are changed then my nails stay clean, but the hands stay moist and it will ruin your nail polish after few hours.

Hey, don't knock cats. Yes they can be PITA's, but they can also be great fun. Story in a minute, but I want to third the lava rocks. I had two small trees inside that one or two of my cats decided to use as liter boxes because they were two good to go with the others in theirs. (I have 4 cats). So we put lava rocks in the pots, and both the plants, the cats, and their humans are much happier. As for cats...true story...my uncle, who lived out in the country, hated cats. He had a stray that wouldn't go away and threatened to shoot it the next time he saw it. After coming home from church late one night with my aunt, he saw the cat sitting under the carport. He honked his horn and it wouldn't move. So he got out and looked at what the cat was staring at. It was a 3 ft long rattler. If my uncle had of gotten out of the car where he parked it normally, he would've gotten bit. Needless to say, the cat got to stay after that.

No, it is a tall, wide desk he was going under to pee in the corner anyway, so we put the large litter pan in there...I have been corrected by my husband, who uses that desk and has witnessed him using that pan since we switched to it (larger, 2 feet by 1 1/2 feet and 8 inches deep) and put it where he had taken to peeing (after properly cleaning the carpet, walls, desk, etc). He squats in the middle, but stays his pee with such force it spatters over the end, and as he is 15 + lbs and LOOOONNNNGGGG..... I may try turning it lengthwise so the long end sticks out, perhaps he will move more to the outside end when peeing, then maybe his spray (he IS fixed, BTW) will stay more contained. So on talking it out, as I write this, perhaps you are right, I just wasn't thinking it all the way through...I will try re-orienting the box long way in and . Also had the thought of putting the inside end inside a sideways rubbermaid container to protect the wall and carpet, too....can just wash that off when cleaning the litter pan. :)

I am thankful that none of my cats do more than growl and give me a pained look when i trim their nails. Now my woofer will allow me to put the clipper on the nail but then pull back.

I'll have to give that a try. I used to be able to take her to the vet clinic and get her nails trimmed for $10 by a vet assistant, usually same day I called. Now an appointment has to be made with her vet, and I have to pay for the office call plus the trimming.

My cats enjoy it when I lift them up by the scruff of the neck, esp. the indoor cat Pretty. She'll come along side my chair in the evenings and want to tussle a bit and I end up lifting her up in the air for several seconds. When I put her down she stands very still as if in a trance. I agree it's a sensation they remember from their mothers.

Thanks for the tip! I have yet to try it...but will in the future. The photo of Martha Stewart biting her cats ear...can't unsee it...(Martha was told it establishes her as the cat's mom)..ain't happening here....

I'd be curious to know if the pressure compresses something (nerves, arteries) in the animal's neck.

I can't compress the back of my neck without getting faint in my old age. (I can't replace a light bulb in a ceiling fixture if I have to look up at it, bending my head back.)

I've been so fortunate all of mine have been willing to sit in my lap (facing away from me) as I clip nails. There's the occasional squirm, but I'm able to get the job done fairly quickly.

I could see that working. We had a cat who needed shots several years ago. I was the lucky person who got to give them. I was told to give shots in the scruff of the neck because they don't really feel them there. It reminds them of when their mother used to carry them around and apparently doesn't hurt.

As for that clothespin, it might pinch too much. I wonder if one of those plastic hair claw things would be gentler?
