Area Rug Size and Style Help

Looking for advice on the style we should go with for our area rug in our family room.

This rug currently is 8x10, do we need to go bigger? We have a mid century house so leaning into that for this room - so the rug needs to go.

(Please note we’re already replacing accent chair and tv stand/cabinet)

BIGGER is almost always better, in your case you could pull the rug forward (toward the TV) so the back legs of the sectional are off the rug. But since you are replacing it anyway get one that allows you to see floor all the way around but allows the front legs of all furniture to rest comfortably on the rug.

You definitely want the accent chairs front legs comfortably ON the rug and since you can see some floor under the couch make sure the rug goes at least 1/2 way under the main part of the sectional.

I wanted to put the rug right next to your fabric to see how it looks! :-) I like it! All of the rugs that I posted, except for the braided rug, came from www.selectrugs.com. You'll have to go in and use their search feature -- I was searching under floral rugs and traditional rugs in ivory/beige shades. (I have ordered from Select Rugs and have been very pleased with their service.)

Thanks, prairiedawn. My style actually is more of a rustic/modern country style rather than traditional, although I have a mix of everything! I used BM Baby Turtle in the powder room and laundry room, which are adjacent to the foyer, SW Artifact in the great room, which is just beyond the foyer, and SW Believable Buff and Camelback throughout the rest of the house. roseabby, I spoke to the salesman at Macys and he also mentioned a 2'6" runner may be out of scale. The problem is I do NOT want to cover up most of the wood flooring. Would a smaller area rug placed horizontally across the front doors, rather than a larger run placed vertically in the room, look strange? The two doors are 6' wide and the entire wood entry is approx. 10' wide.

You don't have to use a rug. But since your tables are so close in color to your flooring, I do think it would look nice to have one. You have a lot of gray and brown in the room. I would get a rug that has more color to warm up the space. The example above would look great. Look at the deeper blues and reds from your artwork for inspiration. The furniture doesn't need to be 100% on top of the rug, and you want a minimum of 1 foot from all your baseboards. Look at Overstock.com for some really nice affordable options.

The mock-up skewed the patterns much bigger, but you can see how the scale really is in the link. Great-looking rug and 100% wool.

I’d tape off 9x12 and see what you think.
