Since the space will get lots of outdoor stuff tracked …in a full size weatherproof rug will save the flooring from becoming slippery or damaged..

A bench under the coat hooks will offer a great spot to tuck shoes and boots underneath..as well as a comfortable spot to sit on to remove them..

Too many heights for 2 colors. Paint the entire space white OR paint the walls above the green, green also and just the trim white

Not liking the 2 tone walls and that little white door looks odd. Blend it with your wall color.

Just continue the door and window trim in steam as you planned. You can see that steam is a slightly beigier white so wont look as stark as the primmer. A rich green + creamy beigier white is a classic combo. Maybe youll decide to paint the upper wall green to match the wood paneled lower - or not. Just get it done and go from there. I think youll find that once you get all the whites same steam color the room will look a lot more cohesive. Paint the dog door same green.

This is why not all spaces are conducive to wainscoting. Paint the entire wall the same color, whether it’s green or white. Too many competing lines to color block.

Im guessing the shelves go in the space on the right .... which, if the same green, is going to give the room a more complete and well balanced look. Its a utilitarian room folks, the wainscot is appropriate and the green + cream combo quite a nice vintage look for this room. Not sure what the objection is really, people typically combine colors of cabinetry in kitchens and such. Curious what this room connects to, what colors?

If the would is a semi or satin finish I would paint the walls the same color in a flat. That will give just a bit contrast. I think the window and door can then be painted the white color. Light color natural baskets would be pretty.

I agree with @Debbie Downer Just press on with painting the trim Steam. The stark white doggie door does grab attention - I’d try painting it green. This looks like a great mud room! A rug at door that includes both colors would be great too.

Thank you everyone! I am going for a classic vintage look, so I thought the colors were appropriate. It’s a mud room for a home with dogs and horses, so in my opinion the most important room in the house! I wanted a dark color to hide the mud between cleaning. I appreciate folks input on decor- I’ve already been planning for some pretty baskets and a large washable rug on the way. I will consider painting the shelf area green, but want to keep the upper walls white to keep it bright. I was mostly at a loss regarding the window and door trim, but maybe once it’s all painted it will look good. I need to take the dog door cover to a paint store for advice on paint products- it’s an acrylic plastic. Cheers!

I thought wallpapering the upper part would look really nice and take away from the 'stripey' and still keep it light.

I would like to see the door and it's casing in the green for less contrast there. Getting the dog door dark will help a lot too. Beautiful colors!

I have a dark green/blue mudroom on a busy farm and I love it but it does get visually chaotic because of the stuff. It's functional though! Do what you like. If it's not done you can come back to it. People comment often that they love our mudroom, even when it's used hard. LL Bean's rugs have been great for our mudroom (wash with a hose, not a machine, kind of rugs).

If you do go forward with wall paper for top part of walls, maybe you can cover the dog door cover with it too? Just a thought - it won’t disappear as it would if painted but it won’t jump out as the white does. I bet the plastic cover is paintable with the right primer. Or maybe the cover is metal? I like @molman idea of painting door green but think I’d leave the casing white to match the window trim next to door.

Thanks for the tip, KW, and I loved the wallpaper idea, but after it dawned on me the struggle I’d have with wallpapering to the vaulted ceiling, I decided to leave it the creamy white. It looks good!

Thanks, Molman! I did paint the dog door green, which helped immensely. And one I got the creamy white in the door frame it look a lot better than when it was just the primer. I can’t wait until I have the funds to finish the bench and shelves and buy some cute baskets. Winter time is the clutter time- overalls, puffy coats, barn coats, and head lamps! Can’t wait for the reduced maintenance of summer, which is when most company comes over and the place will look much less chaotic!
