Sunrise Window Replacement Frame and Sash Reinforcement

Hi all,

I was hoping to get other expert opinion on the topic of sash and frame reinforcement on the Sunrise brand of windows. First off, thanks to experts and experienced homeowners for providing such excellent information on this site while making this big financial and impactful decision.

I have had several contractors out to give quotes and at this point I have the most confidence in a contractor who is quoting Sunrise. Reason for my confidence in him surrounds his approach to proper installation, long track record and knowledge of window construction. So far, his advice aligns well with what I have studied from the experts on this site. I am stuck on one hangup however and this surrounds sash and frame reinforcement with fiberglass (FiberCore). The project involves replacing with a mix of single hung, fixed picture window, and casements. I believe that the product he is recommending is the standard Sunrise window (NOT Essentials) with upgrades (foam filled frame insulation, Solar Clean, Ultra 12 U plus S2100A glass package). The largest single hung window is 30"X72", largest casement is 30"X60", and largest fixed window is 30"X60". 3 openings will have casement/fixed/casement and 5 openings will have a pair of single hungs. Given the scope of the project, I think he is trying to provide good value and does NOT think we need frame/sash reinforcement where we live (central NC, no risk of hurricanes, mild winters, also single hungs are tighter etc). From what I have read here, reinforcement may be particularly important with large windows in the Sunrise brand. Any opinions on this, particularly in regards to size of window? Has Sunrise done anything to improve this problem in their windows without reinforcement?

If this matters at all, we plan to live in this house for at least 10 more years but don't see this as our "forever home."

Its been a minute since I've sold or installed that line so I don't recall exactly what options are available, but in general I would opt for the sash reinforcement. They use a very slim profile which is nice for viewable glass area, but can get a little shaky as far a strength on larger, hung units. The width is more crucial than the height in this regard, however at 30" or wider, again, the sash reinforcement certainly wouldn't be a bad idea. The lack of a sash interlock on their hung units is another reason why it is advisable.

Frame reinforcement on the other hand is less critical IMO, as the frame is anchored to the opening. As long as the quantity and placement of fasteners is optimal, frame reinforcement really isn't adding anything.

Thanks, HomeSealed! I actually was searching around some more and found this post from 11 years ago that you gave similar advice. I guess not a lot has changed with the window to address these issues and the business set up with different installers having access to different product lines. I find their website pretty difficult to navigate (!) and resort to other sources like this to get more information. Other manufacturers make it much easier to compare product lines and upgrade options. Here is the 2012 post with many detailed explanations:

Please consider repairing the old weight and pulley system (instructions can be found at oldhouseweb.com) and removing the paint or whatever is keeping the window from working well. Nothing glides as nicely as a restored and functional old pulley window. Mine I can lift with one finger! Sometimes the weights have to be changed, if the thickness or weight of the glass is not the same as the orignal pane. Its a cheaper fix and I do believe adds to the value (even in $$$ terms) of your old house, especially if you have a complete set of original windows with wavey glass. Its sorta like collector cars or collector anything-- the more original, the better. I hired a guy whose specialty it was to do the first few, then once I learned how to take apart the window (it can be tricky) then I did the rest myself. re: noise, this might sound hard to believe but its true. I had my house air sealed to prevent updraft effect from happening -- my house had a lot of air leaks so what happens is as hot air rises, it pulls in cold air thru all the windows and other gaps. If you seal all the openings into your attic and also around basement and the base of the house, that prevents the updraft from occuring AND it keeps air from being pulled in from around the windows. The first thing I noticed is how much QUIETER it was in the house! I couldn't believe it! I was advised to look at insulation and sealing up drafts BEFORE considering windows and Im glad I did. I was a skeptic but Im a believer now!

I know of one company that has an "insert" wooden window which will forgive the slight out of squareness of an old window. It is Semco which is a old line window company out of Wisconsin. You will pay as much for this "replacement" as you would a new window but it is far better than any typical "replacement window" Since it also comes with it's own frame, you do not have to mess with sizing screens to the outside frame. Normally with a sash pack (Semco has them too) you cover the outside wood with aluminum coil and measuring for screens is a pain. If the frames are good, not rotten, square and plumb, go for the sash pack. It is also possible to get sash packs that do not reduce the existing clear opening which could effect egress requirements. Even if your existing windows do not meet today's egress, you can replace them with like size but you cannot reduce from the current clear opening.

Yes they are. Reinforcement is a great feature as it can prevent the window from warping although both of the aforementioned windows use a very high grade uPVC so warping would be rare either way. However, the true reason is to prevent deflection which is caused when a gust of wind causes the top and bottom sash to separate ( ever so slightly) at the meeting rail where air infiltrates causing a draft. Sash reinforcement along with a high quality extrusion will prevent that. Thats one of the main reasons both have such low air leakage rates. Further, the hardware is mounted into 2 or 3 walls of pvc PLUS the reinforcement which adds strength. Keep in mind, both Okna and Sunrise use composite reinforcement and do NOT use conductive metal which could not only negatively effect the uFactor but also cause condensation inside the sash.
